A Grave Introduction Empty A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 1:37 am

Red. Red in the sky and green on the ground. White on the hands and weight on the shoulders. Sinew needed to craft, to fashion, to sculpt, but one cannot make bricks without clay. He needed his clay, and he still wasn't able to get into the morgue at the hospital without people questioning him. He didn't like questions. He liked them less when he didn't have answers. But he still needed clay. So he would find clay, take it from a place no one would miss. He had the tools to get what he needed: a shovel, a hand to delve into the earth and find that which he sought; a crowbar, to pry open the coffins, the chests that hid the gold inside; his surgical knife, to take the material into easier to transport pieces; and a large backpack, to carry the clay, to hide it from prying eyes, and ease the burden on his arms.
"Topaz Cemetery" the sign above him said. You shouldn't be here, The Rancid Noises whispered. "I don't care." Sinew answered.
He entered the graveyard and began looking at all the graves; some were well overgrown, some laid with fresh flowers, but he didn't want these. Graves with grass meant graves with time, and graves with time meant flesh with rot, and rot corrupted the flesh, and he would not sculpt with corrupted flesh. He needed fresher clay...
His foot sank for a moment. At first he ignored the sensation, thinking his shivering mind was playing games again, games he did not wish to play, but stopped... No, it was not playing with him. He looked down and saw a fresh grave, new soil, no signs of grass. A rectangular slab of brown, a streak of death in the oasis of life. It was perfect.
"Verlina Scholz" the grave said. Turn back, the Rancid noises whispered. "Shut... up..." Sinew answered.
He put down his tools and picked up the shovel, the hand, the starting of it all, and plunged it into the soft soil. It was late afternoon, the sun was setting, making the sky red... Red in the sky and green on the ground. The world deemed it beautiful. It deemed him hideous. He would prove it wrong.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 2:16 am

It was getting late.  The sun had almost set and its light silhouetted the tall skyscrapers of Ruby City.  The red sky slowly dripped down towards the horizon.  Jeremy and Byron were the only two on the lonesome street, which was to be expected, as it was a good distance away from the hubbub of the city and near the famous Topaz Cemetery.  Most people, Byron included, thought cemeteries were creepy at night, and Topaz Cemetery was no exception.

Byron and Jeremy had just recently gotten to know each other but they were already getting to be good friends.  They had spent the majority of the day around South Emerald, hiking around the nature trails leading around the Opal Grove.  Once it started getting late, the two decided to head back.  It was inevitable that they pass by the Topaz Cemetery.

As the cemetery was slowly passing by Byron raised a question, "So Jeremy, I was quick to drag you over to South Emerald when you said you wanted to hang out, so..." Byron paused for a moment, rubbing the back of his head, "I was just wondering if you had fun, I really couldn't tell while we were out and I just want to make sure you didn't come along just for my sake."

Byron waited with bated breath for Jeremy's response.  Regardless of what he says however, Byron diverts his attention to something strange.  He had seen that short man in the cemetery out of the corner of his eye, but now that he was looking right at him from outside the gates he could tell something was amiss. Byron furrowed his brow, "Hey, look at that guy over at that grave there. Is he..."  Byron watched the mysterious figure plunge his shovel into the dirt.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Whilst walking home and hearing Byron's question, Jeremy shrugged, "It was alright, good just to hang out with my friends. Certainly better company than some of the people in school." He honestly had more fun than he thought, but if he said that downright, people would think he's overjoyed or something.

He had noted the stranger in the cemetery almost as quick as Byron, and as soon as the man started digging, Jeremy said, "Is he... Grave-digging? Should we stop him, because I don't think that's legal, and I don't see anyone else around right now..." Obviously he should've stopped the guy, but it was fun to ask the question aloud.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 2:56 am

The dirt was hot and heavy. The Rancid Noises began clawing at him again, singing their banshee's curse inside his head. He needed out, he needed out... He needed them to stop. He stopped digging for a moment and clawed at his ears with on hand, trying to silence them, to no avail. Frustrated, he threw down the shovel and walked over to his bag; he brought his medication with him in case his symptoms got too bad; he had to stop this before it became a problem. Before it became a problem.
He began fiddling with the clamps on one of the side pouches of the bag when he saw them; two kids stopped by the cemetery, looking up at him from the fence. He froze.
"I don't see anyone else around right now..." One of the kids said. They know. They've seen. The Rancid Noises whispered. "This isn't good..." Sinew answered. Sinew stared at the children, his eyes wide. What was he going to do? What could he do? He had to stop this before it became a problem. Before it became a problem.
He put a finger to his lips and waved frantically with his other hand for the kids to leave. Hopefully they'd listen. They were kids, of course they'd listen. Kids always listen to adults.
"That's a lie." Said the past. You didn't. The Rancid Noises whispered. "I know..." Sinew answered.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 3:33 am

It seemed like Jeremy had at least somewhat enjoyed himself, which greatly relieved Byron.  To Jeremy's question, Byron responded with an obvious answer, "Of course we should stop him." Anger crept into Byron's eyes, "He thinks he can just go in and steal from peoples graves?  What right does he have over their remaining families.  We are supposed to become heroes, right?  Well what kind of heroes would we be if we couldn't even stop a petty grave robbery." Byron punched his fist into his other palm, raring to go.

The man stopped shoveling and moved over to some sort of bag.  He caught sight of Byron and Jeremy and just stared at them.  For a moment there was silence, until the mysterious man made a hushing gesture and waved the two boys away.  Confusion crossed Byron's face. "Is he really trying to shoo us away?" Byron asked rhetorically.  He then heard the mysterious man whisper as if talking to a companion, but no one else was around.  No one save the three.

"Seriously, whats with this creep?" This man was strange.  Not a normal strange as in that guy you pass on the street with the pink polka-dotted tie.  No, this guy was just unnerving.  The man didn't seem like much of a threat; much less so with two against one, but there was something about him that just made Byron's stomach turn.  Everything about this guy was unnatural.

"Jeremy," he whispered to his friend, "be careful with this guy.  Something doesn't seem quite right."  Byron took a step forward, finally passing through the twisting coils of metal making up the gate.  He called over to the mysterious man, "Hey, what do you think you are doing?" the previous confusion had once again given way to rage, yet he felt his gut tell him to remain cautious.  "I highly doubt you are supposed to be sifting through someone's grave."

Jeremy smirked, "Glad you have the same thought process as me..." He then observes as the guy tries waving them away, "Yeah... I think he is." This guy was seriously creeping him out.

Jeremy shrugs at Byron's next question, "I dunno, he's just creepy?"

He nods to Byron warning him and walks up to the creep alongside Byron.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 3:47 pm

The kids weren't listening. They came into the graveyard and walked up to him. Sinew needed his pills, but he couldn't risk the kids seeing them. He knew that people killed for pills, and he couldn't trust them. The Rancid Noises seemed to know that they would not be suppressed and started clawing at his skull again.
"I highly doubt you are supposed to be sifting through someone's grave." One of the boys said. He's right. The Rancid Noises whispered. "I... I am." Sinew answered.
He stood up straighter, attempting to act confident, but his voice shook; he wasn't expecting confrontation. The boy was asking him a question, and Sinew hated questions. He hated them more when he didn't have answers. "I... work here. I am a gravedigger here. Th-the person buried here was.... Not supposed to be buried yet, yes." He flashed a nervous smile. "S-simple mix up a-and all, buried the wrong person in th-the wrong hole. Have to dig them up, swap them out, very adulty thing, very important thing, a thing you kids don't have to w-worry about. S-so just run along." He smiled warmly, his fingers nervously playing with each other through his white latex gloves he borrowed from the hospital. He slowly slid the backpack on top of the crowbar, trying to hide it. The crowbar was uncooperative, and began hissing from its hiding spot. He hoped the kids wouldn't hear it. In reality, the crowbar was not hissing, but he wasn't exactly subtle with his movements, and they likely already saw the crowbar.

Byron continued forward.  The mysterious man was seeming more and more suspicious by the second.   His constant fidgeting and the stutter in his words becoming much more apparent.  He claimed he was indeed supposed to be there and that he was a gravedigger, but he wasn't at all convincing.  "Do you seriously expect me to believe that?" Byron was half way between the gate and Sinew now.

Sinews attempt at a warm smile came off as really forced and downright creepy.  Byron saw as Sinew not so subtly attempted to cover what looked like crowbar with backpack.  Byron's eyes narrowed.  "I knew it," anger crept into his voice.  Sinew and Jeremy would see Byron's skin, his bare shoulders down to his hands and his face, begin turning a pinkish red as his powers started to activate.  "I'm not just going to let you do whatever you want and think you can get away with it." Byron had picked up his pace and was fast approaching Sinew now.

Jeremy sighed at the stanger's obvious lies, "Dude, if you're gonna lie, at least get good at it before you start trying." He was amazed at how hopeless this guy was at lying.

When he saw the crowbar he let out a second sigh, whispering, "Yeah... Lets get him..." He sped up after Sinew along with Byron and starts looking around for some source of water.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 5:31 pm

Sinew could hear his heart beating in his ears, a thundering pounding of wardrums as the armies of hell clawed up to drag him down. Why were these children so aggressive? It was just a corpse, a pile of resources meant to be tapped into. Did they know the corpse? If so, wouldn't seeing it be remade into beauty satisfy them? He didn't know. And they didn't seem reasonable. He dropped his shovel and pulled out the surgical knife from his pocket; it was small, smaller than a switchblade, but it was sharp and it knew how to cut flesh. It struggled in his trembling hands, eager to meet the boys.
"I-I don't want to hurt you! Stay back!" Sinew's charade said. Yes you do. The Rancid Noises whispered. "Shut up!" Sinew answered.
He stumbled backwards, trying to keep distance between him and the approaching children, but tripped on something, landing square in a puddle of rain water. He looked at his feet and screamed. Verlina had come out of the grave, eyes red and angry. In reality, he had simply stumbled over the gravestone, but he still stared and screamed at it, stumbling backwards, moving the point of his trembling scalpel from boy to boy to gravestone. "S-STAY BACK!" He screamed. "I know where your arteries are, I know what veins to cut! I can slice you open and bleed you, leave you dry and empty... Do... Not... Touch me!"

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 6:02 pm

The moment Sinew brought out the blade Byron stopped dead in his tracks.  He quickly put an arm out, blocking Jeremy from moving forward any farther.  This is bad Byron thought.  He may know how to fight, but a blade was still a blade.  Hit you wrong and you were a goner.  Byron watched Sinew closely, hoping for a moment to move in.  A moment came sooner than expected but not in the way Byron thought.  The man had backed up and tripped over the gravestone, falling into a puddle.

In the next moment, Sinew screamed a horrifying scream that caused Byron to jump back, his arm possibly tapping Jeremy.  The cause of the scream was seemingly for no reason.  Had he fallen on his blade and cut himself?  Sinew raised his blade back at them, proving that was wrong.  But not only was he shifting between the two boys, but he also pointed at the gravestone of a "Verlina Scholz".  Sinew yelled at them to stay back, threatening them and the gravestone.

"If you really don't want to hurt us, then put your knife down, now."  Byron's voice was tense and he stood in his place, not moving any closer.  Byron took a boxing stance, ready to charge the short distance between him and Sinew at a moments notice.  Suddenly remembering Jeremy's power had something to do with water, Byron kept his eyes locked on Sinew but spoke to Jeremy.  "Hey, you're up."

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by vating Fri Jul 22, 2016 6:18 pm

Jeremy stopped just before Byron could block him, he understood the threat of that tiny scalpel and mumbled, "Great... He's using a weapon and I don't see an-'" Right then, he heard the horrifying scream that made him back up a few feet, he guessed the stranger had broken something, but that didn't seem to be the case as he got up without too much trouble.

He heard what Byron said, then saw what the stranger was standing in and smirked, taking a step forward and raising the entire puddle around the stranger and then all of it latching onto him at once. He then raised the temperature of the water a little, allowing it to reach points to which it's hot and uncomfortable, but not dangerous yet.

He then shouted, "Listen to this guy, he's trying to help you now."

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 6:36 pm

Heat. True, authentic heat. The Rancid Noises faltered, and Verlina retreated back into her grave. The hot water around him helped to bring him back to reality, but reality wasn't any kinder than wherever he was before. The water was surrounding him. It was hot, hotter than water should be. They have powers... They have to. Sinew thought to himself. I can't fight them. I can't. But I can't let them walk away either.
The scalpel trembled in his hands, but slowly he lowered it. "D-don't hurt me! Y-you're good kids, good little children, correct? A-am I really worth this much trouble? Th-the effort it would take to hurt me? The consequences you'd r-risk for hurting an innocent man?" He smiled nervously. "L-let me go! Release me from... This!"

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 7:00 pm

Byron watched as Jeremy raised the puddle of water, making it surround Sinew.  The man was still stuttering but his episode seemed to be over for the moment.  Sinew began speaking to them of his innocence.  With the scalpel lowered Byron passed Jeremy to just out of arms reach of Sinew. "We will only hurt you if you refuse to cooperate.  And I fail to see how digging up someones grave makes you innocent.  Now are you going to drop your weapon and come with us quietly," the redness on Byron's arms suddenly intensified, a wisp of steam rolling off his shoulders, "or not?"

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 7:25 pm

Sinew stares at the talking boy; he completely missed what he said as he was fixated on something more interesting... His skin. It was red... The boy was heating himself up, steam was visibly coming off of his body... He could change the temperature of his very flesh.
What fantastic things he could make with such malleable clay...
Without thinking, he slipped the scalpel back into his pocket and slowly stepped forwards toward him; his voice shifted tones, and he seemed eerily calm despite the heat on his skin. "I... I will not fight you. I just ask... To let me see..." He mumbles as he approaches the boy, reaching out for his hand. "I must see, I must know... I-I'm a scientist, see, and this..." He locks eyes with the host of the flesh. "No, you... Fascinate me."

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 7:45 pm

Immediately Byron noticed the sudden change in Sinew's demeanor.  What was before a frantic, scared little man was now in a daze, a sort of trance almost, completely fixating on the skin covering Byron's arms.  As Sinew reached out, even though he had already put away his scalpel, Byron instinctively stepped back.  Byron could deal with a raving psychopath, but what he couldn't deal with was a man as sporadic as this, throwing constant curve balls at him so he had a hard time reacting.

"You called yourself a scientist.  Guess you weren't a grave digger after all."  Byron narrowed his eyes as Sinew continued his approach, unimpeded by the hot water surrounding him.  Byron yelled, "Are you listening to me?" Fascinate him?  Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.  Frustrated Byron said, "You want to see so bad? Fine."  He grabbed the wrist of Sinew's outstretched arm with a tight grip.  Sinew would feel the heat begin to envelope his arm where Byron grabbed him.   Byron's arms were starting to burn himself now, too.  He had pushed his power too much.  Byron winced, in mild pain.  He had to get this over with quickly, or risk severely damaging his body.

Jeremy was about to heat up Sinew even further as he approached until Byron ran in and grabbed Sinew. He was a little irritated, but calmed down quickly and said, "Byron... Be careful, I don't like this..." He sure as hell hoped Byron knew what he was doing or well... This may get ugly fast.

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by Vexation Fri Jul 22, 2016 8:05 pm

The heat on his arm brought many things... Pain. Pain was the first and most prominent thing Sinew noticed. He collapsed to one knee for a moment, but reached out with his other hand to keep the boy's arm from pulling back. Fascination; Sinew gazed in wonder, running his fingers up the boy's heated arm... It was miraculous... Painful, but amazing. He could see the skin turn red as though from sunburn... The flesh was capable of damaging itself, a tragic but unsurprising feature...
A sample.
Sinew needed a sample of the boy's flesh. He needed it, needed to study this clay, needed to know if it kept these properties when detatched from the main host. He readjusted his grip; the arm the boy was holding reached back and held on in exchange, burning his palm as he held on, but he couldn't risk the boy pulling away before he had his sample. He slipped his other hand into his pocket to pull out the scalpel. Just some tissue from the forearm, that's all he needed. It would hurt, it would be unpleasant, but the boy would live and could be healed.
"Just... One... Sample..." He muttered as pointed the scalpel at the boy's arm.

Sinew's initial reaction was exactly how Byron thought it would be.  He figured that would be the end of it.  Sinew would beg him to stop and he could take him to the police no problem.  But that was not all that happened.  Sinew reached out with his other hand, grabbing a hold of Byron's arm.  He then began to feel his burning arm, examining it closely, completely ignoring the heat coursing from Byron's body to Sinew.

This was getting to be too much for Byron. Just what IS this guy?  He attempted to pull back, but Sinew's fingers were digging into his skin, locked in place.  He tried to pull harder, but Sinew readjusted his grip and grabbed his wrist with the hand Byron had grabbed.  Byron felt his stomach drop as he watched Sinew pull the scalpel back from his pocket.  "Just... One... Sample..."  Byron's skin continued to heat up in time with his rising panic.

Byron took a step back, lightly tugging Sinew with him but not breaking free of the grip.  Byron's eyes were darting wildly now, moving back and forth between Sinew's deranged expression and the scalpel inches from his arm.  Byron's face oozing panic and anger. "Ge-Get off of me!"

Suddenly the heat stopped emulating from Byron's body, followed by the progressive yet quick drop into that of ice.  A small cloud of steam shot from Byron's body at the sudden temperature switch, mildly obscuring the two.  Byron yelled out a cry of unrelenting rage, "Rrrraaaaaahhhh!"  He sent his available fist, solid and icy, flying straight at Sinew's face.

Jeremy saw what was happening and shouted, "Get off of my friend now!"  As he was saying this, he increased the temperature of the water to as hot as he possibly could, Byron will probably feel it and be wounded by it, but at least he won't be cut into.  The water was just under boiling now and if he went any hotter, he'd lose control of it and it would fade away. Anyone in contact with the water would feel intense pain from the sheer heat of it now.

The water on his skin went impossibly hot, causing Sinew to cry out in pain; the Rancid Noises joined the chorus of his screaming, and the cold, the cold in his hand and the hard fist in his face, it all sent him sprawling. He heard steam hissing off of him as the immense temperature difference caused a portion of his watery prison to evaporate. He lay on the ground, trembling, crying out in pain. "PLEASE! NO MORE! I-I-I UNDERSTAND! PLEASE!" He was again the blathering man from before, unable to move, unable to act, unable to do anything but sob from the pain. "Release me! I beg of you!"

A Grave Introduction Empty Re: A Grave Introduction

Post by V.Carnage Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:03 pm

Water vapor condensed around Byron's icy body creating a sort of mist.  Byron had never changed his body temperature to be this low before.  It was cold, unnaturally so.  Down to his very core was shivering.  He found breathing was difficult, and began gasping for air.  He fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around himself, but it did nothing.  His arms were just as cold as the rest of him.  He felt the pain, immense pain.  The rapid temperature change had damaged his skin, he could tell.  His skin having received what was an equivalent to a first degree burn  and frost bite in a manner of seconds of each other.  He tried to calm his mind, letting the warmth flow back into his body.  He could once again feel his limbs as his internal body temperature slowly faded back to normality.

Byron was exhausted now, and his skin hurt.  He pushed himself much farther than he had expected to.  Especially against someone seemingly as defenseless as this mysterious man.  However, there was a sense of impending danger emanating from this man.  It was as if Byron's primal instincts screamed at him that this man was a threat to his very existence.  But he couldn't tell why.  Sinew screamed in pain from the simultaneous assault of both Byron and Jeremy, begging to be let free.  Byron appeared much more calm now and watched the man.  "You," Byron made an effort to stand, "Just who are you?" He fell back on one knee.  His vision faded out for a flash but he caught himself from falling over.  Byron held himself up with one hand on the ground, retaining consciousness but holding little strength.

Jeremy cooled the remaining water on Sinew to a still, very much uncomfortable state, but not to the point of severe injury. He walked in front of Byron as Sinew backed up and said, "What were you doing with the scalpal, why were you digging the grave, and why were you talking to yourself?" He knew he had the advantage in every way now and looked to the side to see more, albeit smaller, puddles, "Answer, or I'll soak you some more."

Sinew's eyes flicked up to see the boy above him; this one was different, puppeting water from a distance. Less interesting, more frightening. "I-I'm a doctor." He stuttered. The pain was driving him to and from the Rancid Noises rapidly, but now he seemed to have almost as much clarity as though he had taken his medication. His mind scrambled for answers, answers he did not have and so could not give. A million thoughts flashed through his head. Scalpel led to doctor, digging led to corpses, talking to himself led to... insanity? Clarity? He didn't know. He had an idea, but he had to talk fast. "I-I... I'm a doctor." He started. It was the truth; he was in fact a doctor at West Citrine's Hospital. "I-I have my identification if you need it... I can prove that." He gasped for air, trying with little success to calm himself; he still lay on his back, holding his hands up defensively. "Th-this is the grave... of... Th-the East Diamond Ripper's most recent victim..." The words escaped him before he could even stop to think of them. This was a lie; a blatant lie, but these kids did not know that. The victim's names were never released on the news, only the Ripper's stories. "W-we discovered new... e-evidence when reexamining the x-rays... We need another look at the body. O-of course, we technically can't, not legally, a-as the family refuses to give us permission. B-but... In the interest of the g-g-general public..." He opened his hands in a shrug and smiled nervously. "W-we think it is good to be a-able to catch him. Do you not agree? W-would you really assault me further and take me to prison? A-allow that murder to continue their d-destructive onslaught on the streets?"
