A Two Way Street Empty A Two Way Street

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sat Jul 23, 2016 7:27 pm

I really freakin' hate suits. Sam thought as he stood outside the Golden Dragon; it was the second time in a very short period that he had to gussied up for a gang meeting, and he hated it as much as ever. Combined with the shipment gone south from earlier that week, Sam had a renewed hatred for Jadetown. But it was a necessity; Father wanted to speak with Charon about a great many things; power, restraint, and, as he put it, "a two way street".
Maribelle wasn't present for this meeting; she was off doing... whatever it was that she did when she wasn't playing Ripper. Instead, Sam's fellow bodyguard was Orlando. This at the very least made him feel a little bit better about the situation; no worrying about an invisible friend going nuts with rage. Sam checked his phone; once again, it was about half an hour to the meeting time. He looked up and down the streets for any sign of the gang leader and his men. A twinge of fear lurched in Sam's stomach; he knew very little about Charon except he knew how to take advantage of a bad situation. The problem here was his gang was in a bad situation; would he turn on Father? Try to bring down the larger gang to try and envelop it into his own? Or would he stick to the alliance and try to offer aid? He didn't know, and he wasn't sure if he trusted Charon enough yet to make an accurate judgement...

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:13 pm

Charon had wrestled long and hard with himself about how to approach this meeting. It could go any number of ways, most of them leading to something bad. However, Charon had forced an alliance and so far Father had kept his word. Charon was the only one that looked bad right now. Even with the inclusion of many of Cerberus's gang and supplies, Charon couldn't take out someone like Father if he wanted to. Charon had to show some humility, and admit his wrong. The truth, that was sometimes the most powerful weapon.

Sam would notice Charon down the street, though the only difference from last time was that Charon had no bodyguards present at this meeting. The man had decided to come alone this time. If there was to be retaliation for lying, Charon would take it on himself rather than have his men face the punishment. The young man walked forward to Sam, fixing the cuffs of his newest suit. "Good to see you Sam, you received the money I take it?" he asked in reference to Sam's fee for help taking down Cerberus.

Sam nodded. "Yes, thank you much. Good to see a man of his word out here. That isn't me saying I doubted you for the record; it was simply me thanking you for sticking to it." He looked down the street passed Charon. "Your men get lost? Or did you decide to come alone?" Sam found it odd that Charon would be showing up to a meeting by himself; even if he did trust Father not to kill him, it was still somewhat foolish, and could be interpreted as either a show of humility or a display of sheer cockiness.

"I don't think there's any need for us to be coy of the situation" Charon pointed out to Sam. "I know what this meeting is about, or at least part of it" he said as he glanced towards his men. "I have a feeling that you didn't decide to keep my secret, not that I can blame you for that. Still, I lied and a price needs to be paid. I'd rather pay it myself than have one of my men shot in front of me" Charon remarked. "That might not be what Father plans on doing, but at the very least I'm here to discuss business with him. Whatever happens...happens"

Sam raised an eyebrow at Charon. Having his men shot in front of him? "Gotta admit, you've got some balls for that, Charon. But there's no need to worry about that sort of thing. Father's got at least some honor left in him; if he wanted to shoot men for it, he wouldn't do it at a meeting like this. And especially not at the Golden Dragon. Either way, come on in. Shouldn't keep him waiting." Sam turned and led Charon inside to the back room again. The table has noticeably less food at it this time around; while last time no expenses were spared on a large feast, only two plates were out this time; one in front of Father, the other across the table from him at Charon's spot. Already sitting next to Father was Orlando, a tall, muscular black man dressed in a dark green suit.
"Ah, Charon. It is good to see you, friend!" Father called to Charon; his voice was friendly, but not quite cheery as it was for their first meeting. "Please, have a seat, we've, ah... We've much to discuss."

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:34 pm

"Of course, then again you'd say the same thing even if that's what he was going to do to me...but your point is made regardless" Charon said before walking with Sam in to the Golden Dragon. Hmm, a plate for Father and a plate for Charon? Poison could be a pretty bad way to go depending on what they chose. Of course Charon knew that if they wanted him dead, it didn't matter what they picked. This could very possibly be his last meal.

At least he enjoyed Chinese food.

"Father" Charon said with a small nod of his head before taking a seat across from Father. "Yes we do...I know you have many questions. Ask whatever you want and you have my word that I'll be honest with my answers. I'll give demonstrations as well if you wish, I'm sure Sam described enough for you to get an understanding. Seeing it is different though"

Father raised his hand lightly. "No need for demonstrations, Charon. We're both may be men of action, but we know what the power is; inspiring fear in those around you, yes?" He straightens his tie. "I told you I liked you because of what you were capable of. That has not changed. All that changed is I know how you are capable of it. It's not entirely different from my own power."
Both Sam and Orlando shot a sideways glance to Father; they both seemed surprised that Father had a power, even moreso that he was revealing it to Charon here. Father pulled out his cigar and blew a cloud of smoke into the air. "Tell me, Charon. Pick a word. A word to describe how you feel towards me. I already know what their answers are." Father gestures towards Sam and Orlando, staring into the cloud of smoke.

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:43 pm

Charon raised an eyebrow. Father didn't seem angry or upset at all, he seemed to be taking this deceipt rather well. And then the news came that he had a power. So both men had hidden a secret from the other? Was that what this meeting was about, an exchange of information? A two way street? Charon leaned back in his chair for a moment, contemplating what Father was asking him to do.

"I feel...cautious towards you. I want to believe that you're a friend and ally, but a man with your power could also destroy me if he wanted. It makes me wonder how far you'll let me go with you...if you're going to cast me aside now. Cautious, that's my answer"

Father shrugged slightly. "Cautious... Well, I suppose that's a way to put it. It's natural to feel that way towards a man who holds the same position in a larger organization. Now, I'm going to put this spin on it. You, as you said, view me as a man who could destroy you, but will not because he is a friend and ally. This is a man to be approached with caution and treated..." He smirked. "With respect." The word "respect" was said with some emphasis, as though it carried more power than it seemed. "You have the ability to drop a mask and make men fear you. Impressive, I admit. Myself, my power is quite similar. But instead of fear..." He smiled and held his arms out. "Respect. It makes people listen to you. Makes people consider what you think before what they think. Gives you friends in many places and enemies in few." He put his cigar to his lips and took another drawl. "Not exactly as flashy as what Sam here describes you can do, but respect is a thing that people carry with them long after they leave your field of view. Fear... A lot of fear, to my understanding, runs on adrenaline. The source of fear goes away, you stop being afraid. Then again, I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time." He stared blankly forward, a look of disappointment in his eyes. "Nope... Certainly wouldn't be..."

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 10:57 pm

Charon knew what Father meant by that. Positive emotions were almost always stronger than negative emotions. Humans desired reconciliation over conflict, people desired order and balance over chaos; most of them anyway. So Father could rally people towards him under a positive emotion rather than a negative one. That made him far stronger than Charon in his own way, his capabilities were far greater by making the right kind of friends and getting the favors he needed. So if this was what this meeting was about...why all the secrecy?

"Was there...another reason you wanted me here tonight?" Charon asked curiously. "I sense that this conversation wasn't the only reason for our meeting"

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sat Jul 23, 2016 11:14 pm

Father blinked and snapped back to reality. "Yes, of course, sorry. Got sidetracked; figured I'd get that out of the way since it seemed like that was preying heavy on you. I don't blame you for hiding your powers, I only ask you try not to use them when my men are present. As amusing as it was to watch him take out his frustration on our newest jester..." Father snickered slightly. "But yes, the main reason for the meeting." He sat up in his seat and cleared his throat. "As you may have noticed, the table today is rather... Barren. I normally spare no expense on my guests, make them feel welcome. But, ah... There's been an issue..." He glanced up at Sam, a hint of anger in his eyes. "It was your job." He said in a quiet, but aggressive voice. "Fill him in."
Sam seemed to recoil slightly at Father's curt tone; it was the first time Charon saw Father upset, and Sam seemed to be physically pushed by his anger. "As you hopefully know, we make most of our money counterfeitting money. Ink is hard to come by since the cops keep their noses out for that sorta thing, so we can't get a whole lot of it." Sam held eye contact with Charon as Father's gaze bore into him; Charon would know by now how much Sam hated looking Charon in the eyes, meaning averting Father's gaze must have been absurdly important to him. "We were supposed to get a shipment a few days ago; it would be all we would get for the next two months. Package got damaged, ink unusable. No ink, no bills."
Father turned back to Charon and continued. "No bills means our income is drying up fast. I'm telling you this because this means these next two months will be rough for my group, meaning we will be looking to you heavily for various sources of aid; it's likely we will need to go on more raids of other gangs for smash-and-grab jobs, to which we'll look to you for assisstance on. Profits would be split seventy-thirty, my favor. Normally we'd go fifty-fifty, but I feel I've been generous enough recently, and surely you understand an ally in need. I also understand you've acquired some of Cerberus's hardware; don't worry, not asking for it, just saying that it makes you a force to be reckoned with, so if we get attacked by anyone short of the East Diamond Mafia, I'm fully expecting that damned pickup to come thundering down the street to get them off my lawn. The main purpose of this meeting is to tell you, in confidence, that I'm hurting and will continue hurting for a good while, and I need confirmation that you will be there for me as I have already been there for you. Once these two months are up, our previous arrangement will resume; I'll repay any and all ammo that you spent on me and my family, and, if you want, I can order a custom-made mask that'll only come off at your beckoning, not when some swordsman goes for your throat. Power restraint and protection, all in one fashionable package."

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 11:23 pm

Charon listened with intent as Father started to explain that there was a larger issue than Charon hiding his powers. This was unexepcted, or at least Charon felt this way. What could possibly be important than learning one of your newest allies had a power and chose not to share it with you? Whatever it was, it must have been big for Father to be this upset about. Charon turned to Sam as he started to continue the story.

Charon knew the general information behind what Father did, only enough to know that he made good money doing it, but not enough for Charon to cause any real damage. So, Father's latest supply of ink got ruined and he wasn't capable of making any more money? That was definitely a problem, they would be hurting for some time and morale would be down. Dangerous things happened when morale was down, it caused men to do some rather stupid things.

"I see...kindness for kindness, I can't ask for a much better offer" Charon admitted. He could have been upest that he was losing money, but Charon knew that if he was able to help Father stay afloat that he'd be rewarded in time for his loyalty. And right now, Charon had to prove that loyalty once again after his last deception. This was the perfect way to get in even better graces.

Charon nodded his head. "Your deal is fair all around, and I greatly look forward to the new mask. If your gang is struggling now I take it the sooner we act the better. So tell me, do you have a first target in mind for us to strike?"

There was no hesitation before Father's answer. "Mammon is the first target." His voice was clear and confident. "They run a counterfeit trade of their own; with a bit of luck, we can get in there and steal some ink so we don't lose out on too much of our profits. Simple smash-and-grab, not even on their main compound. I wouldn't expect too significant of security, just some basic guards and the underlings who work there."
Father leaned forward and took in a forkful of noodles. "Easy as this task may be, take at least one of your men with you. I'm impressed at what you did at the Cerberus compound, but I want to leave as little to chance as possible. I'm going to be sending in Sam and one of my other men, still not sure who. But I want everything possible to go right. This isn't a recruitment run for you; kill anyone who stands and fights, let the rats run, and grab all the ink and money you can. I want this to be a four man job if for no other reason than to carry out everything possible. Understood?"

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

Post by Charon Sat Jul 23, 2016 11:42 pm

"I understand the priorities, I'll go in for the loot and nothing else, you have my word on that. I'll take mute with me, this is the kind of job that he always enjoys" Charon explained as he thought about which of his men would be best. Mute was always game for killing, at least when Charon requested it of him. He never hesitated on Charon's orders, that was what made him so likeable.

Charon thought this over for a moment before deciding to make a suggestion. "You said this Mammon runs a trade of their own. If possible, would you allow me to take just one of them alive? If they have more ink or money hidden somewhere, I'm confident I could make him talk. With my power I'm very...persuasive"

Father waved his hand dismissively. "If you can manage it, go ahead. Make him carry some goods with him when you take him home while you're at it." Father took another drawl from his cigar before he continued talking. "But, as I said earlier, please refrain from afflicting my men if you can. Sam here had to sit out a few matches of the ring trying to get his head straight after Cerberus because of you, and in these times, I can't afford that. If it's unavoidable, it's unavoidable, but having my men always ready is far more important than one more box of ink."
Sam's face went bright red; the fact Father threw him under the bus in such embarrassing fashion was incredibly unlike him. Father always liked poking fun at his men in front of other gang leaders to show how no one would question or correct him, but such a display of showing his right hand man's weakness was vastly out of character. The entire ordeal seemed to be preying on his mind significantly.

"For a smash and grab like this, I don't think my power will be necessary. The gun you gifted me alone should do the trick for a speedy operation like this" Charon said seriously. Father made few requests of Charon, so those he repeated definitely stuck in Charon's mind. He was not going to affect Father's men if it could be avoided.

Charon looked over to Sam for a moment, wondering how badly the fear had truly affected Sam. For a trained fighter that used blood, he didn't think fear would affect him so strongly. Charon just smiled through the mask, knowing that he had still never even tried to use Sam's real fear against him...

Father nodded. "Very good. Sam will give you the address of the location on the way out." He stood up and straightened his coat. "In the meantime, either feel free to enjoy the noodles or set out immediately. Either way, I think it would be better to wait until early tomorrow morning to strike, when there's a bit of light and all of their men are still groggy and waking up." Father looked to his two men and nodded. Orlando headed for the door first, and Sam pulled out a small pen and notepad, and began writing down the address of the counterfeitting operations. Father followed Orlando out, and the two left.
Sam walked over to Charon and ripped out the piece of paper with the note on it. "Look forward to working with you again." He said, though his tone seemed to disagree with the words. "Any preference of what kind of man we should bring? We can cover pretty much any needed role."

"We'll contact you once the job is done, and not a moment sooner. Our men will make sure that we take whatever we can, and I'll see if we can acquire something more out of any man we capture alive" Charon assured Father. This operation was too important to delay or mess anything up. They'd attack in the morning, hit them fast and hard before anyone could respond. With some luck, they'd be able to take care of this without anymore dying than necessary. Stealing this kind of thing was going to result in some backlash, but hopefully Father's reputation and respect would hold back anything bloody.

Charon glanced over to Sam as he was the only one left in the room now. Charon pocketed the address. "I'll leave that up to your judgement Sam, you always seem to know how to pick good men for the job" he remarked before looking Sam over for a minute. "My ability to make you feel that way...it's still affecting you isn't it? Not the power itself, but just how easy it was to make you feel so scared"

Sam locked eyes with Charon. "If you were anyone but an ally to Father I wouldn't grace that with a response." He whispered; it was the type of whisper one uses when they're trying to keep themselves from yelling. "Yes, of course I'm still shaken by the fact that you could get in my head just by dropping your mask. But now that I know it's pretty much all you can do, I know that if you try that on me, it'll hardly impede me from making your face just that much less appealing, pretty boy." Sam realized after he finished speaking that he was being needlessly aggressive, and Father would surely reprimand him for threatening an ally if he were present. He refused to let any of this show on his face, keeping his eye contact with Charon.

Charon gained a small smile through the mask. Heh, so he really thought that making people feel a bit paranoid was all that Charon was capable of? Oh how wrong Sam was...and yet now was not the time for Charon to put it on display. Sam would have his time to learn what Charon was made of, but not while they were so vulnerable and weak. For now, the alliance needed to be the first priority over pride.

"We should both get some rest, we have an early morning tomorrow and we'll need to be at our best if we're going to do this quickly" Charon remarked quietly. "Tell me, does Father have any sort of enemies from the Hero community? As much as his respect is worth, I'm sure there must be someone aiming to bring him down"

Sam blinks for a moment, allowing his aggression to calm down. He nodded as Charon said they needed some rest, but shrugged at his question. "Father hasn't said that anyone from SAFE has been looking at him. Most of them are occupied trying to keep the EDM in check; while we're of pretty big size, we're still small fish compared to some of the other gangs running around here. We're just strong due to our connections." There was a brief pause, followed by Father's voice angrily calling, "SAM!", causing the Crimson Scar to jump slightly. Without so much as a nod to Charon, Sam left the room and rejoined Father. The three made their way back home, and Sam had surprisingly little difficulty getting to sleep.

The Following Morning

Sam sat cross-legged on the ground, focusing his mind inwards on his own body, feeling how his blood coursed through his veins. He always found that meditation beforehand made jobs go much smoother for him. Next to him, he could hear Lazy Eye playing with his switchblade; Lazy Eye earned his nickname during the Theodore-Cerberus incident when his eye got slashed by the man the gang now referred to as "Jester", tearing his iris and causing the color to bleed out into the rest of his eye, giving him a rather unnerving look to him. Luckily, his sight seemed remarkably unaffected, or at least his skill with a knife was; it was all he ever took on jobs. Sam was packing his usual gear and a bit extra: his lucky knuckledusters, still studded with iron, a magnum for emergencies, but he also had a switchblade of his own. He never intended to use it on his enemies; he had no training with a blade and so would simply embarrass himself scratching at a foe he could simply knock out. Instead, he found it helped him access some of his newfound tricks in the event of a dire situation...

So they were small enough to where their presence wasn't a large problem for SAFE. That was good to know. It was the problem with being top dog, when everyone was after you it could lead to a life of paranoia and worry. Charon more than most knew the kind of effects those had on people. Charon just watched as Sam left, smiling to himself before leaning back in the chair. This organization needed him, even if they didn't say it out loud. Charon just ate the noodles before him, enjoying the flavor and how filling it was.

When it came time for the opersation, Charon and Mute were ready to move in for the operation. They both wore their battle gear and were armed with their weapons. Charon had his usual blade and double barreled pistol. This was a smash and grab, so stealth wasn't going to be necessary here. Mute had a shotgun that he had picked up from Cerberus, very powerful and dangerous in close quarters. If they needed to scare people, this was the weapon for the job. Charon just moved to where he was to meet Sam and Lazy Eye. "You two have any information on them before we head in?" Charon questioned. "Numbers, weapons, anything?"

Sam hardly heard Charon over the sound of his beating heart, a slow, methodical rhythm. Lazy Eye perked up and addressed Charon in a nasally voice, "Three chummers out front, nuffin' but pistols on 'em. One of 'em keeps naddin' off, he'll take a'least eight seconds to react when fings go to hell for 'im. Inside, not too shore. Saw five guys go in, but none af 'em seem the fightin' type save one of 'em. Didn't catch if he was armed, though. Seems like an easy in 'n' out."
Slowly, Sam opened his eyes. "We approach the group, weapons concealed. The second one of them calls out to us, blast his head open. Lazy Eye'll make sure that the sleepin' guy stays out of the equation while either Mute here or I take out the other vigilant. Then we bust in, cause some ruckus, drive the runners out, kill the fighters. Or try to take a prisoner since that's the kinda stuff you like. We've got a car half a block down the way you just came, we grab any ink and bills we can find, throw them in the car, and get the hell outta here. In and out in less than ten minutes. Questions?" Sam looked up at Charon from his sitting position, itching to move.

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

"Seems like a fairly straightforward plan to me" Charon admitted. It was simple, but sometimes those were the best plans because they allowed for you to improvise anything that was necessary. Mute just nodded to the mention of concealing weapons. He had on a long brown trenchcoat for such a reason, allowing him to hide the shotgun on the inside of the jacket. He looked a little funny while walking, but hopefully not enough to draw any attention to himself. He would be silent throughout the entire operation at least. "I only want a prisoner for the sake of learning more information. If they have more money or ink, it'll be worth it to keep one of these bastards alive...if only temporarily" Charon said before loading his pistol. "Let's move"

The men walked down the path, ready and willing to move forward with this opersation to see it through. IT was still early morning, and there weren't many civilians out on the street. That's what made their group a bit more noticable though. As they started to get close one of the guards looked over, his face falling on Sam and on Charon, recognizing them. "Hey-!" he tried to call out, but Charon quickly pulled out his pistol and fired two rounds in to his chest to kill the man. Mute ran up quickly, taking the butt of his shotgun and smashing the other assailant's face in, quickly knocking him to the ground before smashing his skull open with the heavy shotgun. The sleeping guard woke up, quickly seeing the carnage going on around him. He raised his weapon.

A Two Way Street Empty Re: A Two Way Street

Before the third guard's gun even cleared the holster, Lazy Eye had his switchblade in the bottom of his throat. In a single swift motion, he slid it upwards, slicing it clean open. The man fell to the ground, clutching his profusely bleeding throat and gurgling for air. Sam ran to the door and kicked it clean off his hinges. "Clear the place out! Kill anyone who gets in the way, boys!" Sam yelled, more to intimidate the workers than remind his comrades. He grabbed a table that was between him and the machines in the back and threw it to the side with one hand. There was a total of seven men in the shop; four of them turned and ran, one drew a glock, but seemed unsure to point it at, one ducked for cover behind a counter, and the last... Didn't seem to react. Sam noticed he had earbuds in, and seemed to be completely disconnected from the world. Dumbass.
