Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 2:40 pm

Three days had passed since the incident with Agni and his sister. Sam's gut wound was steadily healing thanks to his powers, but he still felt it was a good idea to stay out of the ring, and out of fights in general. The Fireopal wasn't exactly the best place to go to avoid a fight, but he had been craving their curry chicken for weeks now. He entered the establishment, sat down in a location where he could have a good view of the door. Even though he knew that The East Diamond Ripper was under his control, everyone was apprehensive about her nowadays, and that general feeling of paranoia even set in a little bit for him.
Sam calmly ordered his meal and rubbed the bridge of  his nose; it was still crooked from when it broke in a fight here several weeks ago with Agni. Fun times... Sam thought to himself. He undid the top two buttons of his shirt, putting some of the scars on his upper chest on display; he always found it to be a good deterrent from people wanting to pick a fight; due to his reputation as "The Crimson Scar", people who didn't have a face to go with the name tended to give everyone with prominent scars a wide berth, and while Sam still felt confident in his ability to take anyone on in a fight, he didn't want to risk messing with his healing process, so he sat patiently while he waited for his curry, watching the door for whoever was coming and going from the restaurant.

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 2:48 pm

Sam wouldn't have to wait too long for someone interesting to arrive. While his food was being made, a young man walked through the door. He had white hair, a red eye, and a mask that would stand out in any crowd. The mask was a part of Charon's signature, and he wore it for multiple reasons. Because of it though he was easily recognized in the small circle of people that knew him. While not a large name by any means in the world of crime, Charon's story was recently spreading due to his recent execution and seizing of another gang's territory and men. How it happened seemed to vary depending on the story, but Charon's name was always present.

The man walked forward and spoke with one of the receptionists. He had a reservation as he was meeting with something else in about half an hour, but Charon always liked to arrive to such meetings early. He was escorted to the table he requested before taking a seat. Water was brought to him but Charon made no motion of taking it or even touching it. He just waited patiently, his eye casually glancing around the room.

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:01 pm

As soon as the strange man entered the bar, he caught Sam's attention. He had been hearing stories of a masked man who ran his gang through fear for the past two months or so, and had recently heard of a man named "Charon" who had not just eliminated but taken control of one of his rival gangs. This "Charon" was also said to be wearing a large, leathered mask, and even in the underground, that sort of thing is no coincidence. This man was likely this gang leader; very bold of him to be out and about without an escort. Was he this confident in his strength? Either way, this man was gaining traction, and Sam had to get some information on the man, if for no other reason than so that his family would know if he was a legitimate threat or just ghost stories. Once his curry arrived, he told the waitress he was moving tables, picked up his food and glass of water, and moved to sit down with the strange man.
"Sorry if I'm intruding." He said in a friendly, but serious tone. "I don't normally interrupt a man alone with his thoughts, but... Well, you stand out a bit. And there's been some stories circulating Mocca City." He took a piece of curry into his mouth and gave the man a relaxed half-smile, demonstrating that he knew full well what the stories were, but was unphased by them. In truth, Sam felt this man was likely dangerous, but he knew showing weakness to dangerous men made the situation worse, so remaining calm and laid back was always a way to show they had no upper hand; at the very least, it would diffuse a fight before it began. "Stories about a masked man and his underlings toppling rival gangs in one night and ruling through fear. Mind shedding some light on what's true and what's myth?"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:10 pm

Charon glanced up as a man seemed to be sitting down before him. It only took a few moments to realize just who this was. Charon wasn't deep in the criminal underworld, but some stories you just had to listen to. The scars over the man's body and his general appearance were enough for Charon to know who this was. The Crimson Scar was not someone that you'd forget, and even just sitting across from him Charon could see why. The man had an interesting aura to him, and he definitely showed a lack of fear in any action he would take. Even just asking Charon about any of this could be considered a risk, but Charon had no reason to think they were enemies. The gang he wiped out was too small to have anyone as important as The Crimson Scar backing them.

No, this seemed purely tactical on his part.

"It's the hair that makes me stand out right?" Charon teased as he ran a hand through his white hair. "You'd be surprised how often that gets me noticed, maybe I should dye it" he said before watching the man take a few bites of his food. "Those are very interesting stories you hear, of course word of mouth does tend to allow rumors to spread and grow without anyone controlling them. Fear...I don't think that's how this guy rules. I think like anything else he uses it as a tool when it's necessary. An entire empire can't be built on fear, not forever at least" Charon admitted as he thought back to his early days of crime. "Fear is sometimes the appropriate tool for getting a job done though, wouldn't you agree?"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:20 pm

Sam shrugged slightly. "Fear can be useful at times, sure, but-" he pointed his fork at the man, who at this point he was nearly certain was Charon. "Fear is only as potent as the cause behind it. Some people fear guns because of how easy it is to die to one. But the second someone finds out a gun isn't loaded..." He shrugs dismissively. "Fear's gone, and with it, all the power it held. I more agree with the sentiment of 'an empire can't be built on fear' you said." He took a slight drink of water, thinking. There was something a little off about Charon that he couldn't quite put his finger on; maybe it was just the strange sight of the mask that put Sam off. It made him seem... Inhuman. A thought suddenly struck Sam.
"Even so, there are some fears in the dark that people know so little about that it perpetuates said fear further..." He locked eyes with Charon and almost immediately regretted it, even if he didn't let it show; this man was one who had power and not only knew it, but reveled in it. His gaze back sent a shiver down Sam's spine, but he didn't break eye contact and continued his thought. "The East Diamond Ripper. You hear about him? People winding up puddles of meat and blood in alleyways on their own turf... That's all we know about the guy. That... Now that's a different kind of fear."
Sam was curious as to the man's reaction to this; so far, there were no people from outside of his gang who knew that Maribelle the Ripper was linked to his gang, so he wanted to know just how much of a grip of terror she had on the District. He hoped that the way he would word it would imply that he too had no idea who the Ripper was, or even imply he suspected Charon.

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:38 pm

"To the man that lets someone figure out his gun isn't loaded, he deserved to die for being that stupid, though I admire the bravery for the attempt" Charon said as he kept his gaze upon Sam. With the mask on it was difficult to read any emotion on Charon's face, as all the emotion only came through his eye. "Fear can get you noticed though in a world where power seems to be making all the difference. It's hard to fear a man with a gun when another man can lift cars over his head now isn't it?"

A mention of The Ripper came up, Charon thought about his answer carefully. "It's a very different kind of fear" Charon agreed. "If a man is violent because he doesn't get paid, that's one thing. You can pay him off and he'll leave you alone until the next time he collects. When you figure out what someone wants they are far easier to control. The Ripper though...no one knows what he wants. He just kills. Perhaps it's a revenge thing, or perhaps he's just some crazy guy who does it for fun. I honestly don't have any idea" Charon admitted. "His targets are all gang related, so I suspect there's some kind of past there"

"I set up rules to try and make sure my men are at less risk of getting attacked by The Ripper. No one travels alone while on business, and we try not to work late in the night when it can be avoided. That said, should The Ripper strike at me well....that'll be an interesting day" Charon said before his eyes fell back on Sam. "Does the Ripper scare you?"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:47 pm

A sinking feeling grew in the Sam's stomach. "Should the Ripper strike at me, well....that'll be an interesting day." is a bold statement. What sort of power did this man have to make it so that he was so confident against this unknown force?
When Charon asked Sam if the Ripper scared him, he stopped to think about it for a moment; in truth, she did scare him. While he knew she was working for him, he found her... unpredictable. He knew her powers were beyond her control, and should they be fickle one day they could turn their wretched craft on him and his men. He gave a light nod and decided to give the man an honest answer. "I stumbled across some of her handiwork a while ago. Three men from a rival gang, a drug dealer and his two bodyguards, tenderized in a back alley. As much as I'd like to say I'd be able to handle the Ripper, that's the kind of image you can't get out of your head. So yeah, the Ripper does kinda scare me." Sam didn't notice he referred to the Ripper as "her" as he was talking as the image replayed itself in his mind. Completely oblivious to him showing his hand in such a way he picked up another piece of curry chicken and put it in his mouth.

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:58 pm

Charon was silent for a good minute after Sam finished speaking, probably to the point where things started to get uncomfortable. Charon was wondering what Sam was doing. He had specifically referred to the Ripper as a female, was that on purpose or an honest slip of the tongue? Was this some kind of a test for Charon? He didn't know, but Charon was going to have to play it safe for now. Perhaps Sam was trying to see how brave Charon was, but Charon honestly didn't know if he and his gang could take Sam or the Ripper down should push come to shove. Charon's gang was only just building strength, he couldn't call down this kind of power down on him. Everything he worked for could be gone before it even started.

"Well, I guess we'll just have to hope that neither or us are being targeted by this Ripper huh?" Charon finally spoke. "Sounds like she could be quite the enemy if you made the wrong move" he said. Charon decided to use "she" in order to see if Sam would confirm the information he stated earlier. It would be subtle, but hopefully subtle enough for Charon to learn something without giving away what he noticed.

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:10 pm

Sam's jaw stopped mid-chew. She. Sam's tongue slipped, and Charon caught it. He was playing nice, not pressing for information, but he knew something nonetheless. Father did say he wanted the world to know... Guess rumor's as good a place to start as any
This pause and twinge of fear in Sam's eyes would easily be noticeable by Charon, especially since a piece of chicken nearly flopped out of Sam's mouth as he froze. He caught it and finished chewing the piece, quickly putting on his trademark grin, if a bit shakier than normal. Roll with it. Talk around the subject, imply like Father wants. "Certainly seems so. My family's been lucky enough to not have been hit by her yet. B-but enough about the Ripper." He takes a drink of water to calm himself; he was always put off balance when making a mistake, and had to regain his composure. "Let's talk frankly, shall we. Crimson Scar to Charon." Sam said; if Charon didn't know who he was at this point, he certainly did now. "Your family has been causing a bit of ruckus recently, and Father has heard it. Now, we have no ill will towards you as you've shown none towards us, but he still sees potential in your little group." Everything Sam was saying was completely true; a few days after the stories about Charon's group taking over a rival gang, Father made his feelings toward the group clear: a group to be watched, that could grow as theirs did, and one that will either be a powerful ally or dangerous enemy. In any gang's infancy, they don't exactly have the luxury of turning down alliances, especially with larger gangs like Father's. Allying with a group like this now would save trouble down the line. "So, if you're willing... Father would like to meet you. Have a nice conversation, maybe work out a few deals. We were going to send a messenger to your territory to ask you later this week, but, well..." He shrugged lightly. "Lady Luck smiled on me. Willing to hear a proposition from my Father?"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:20 pm

Man, this guy was not a very good actor. What Charon had only strongly suspected before he now knew was certain. So The Crimson Scar was somehow linked to the East District Ripper. The nature of this connection was still unknown to Charon, but it did exist. Sam was acting more nervous than before. If this was an act, it was a damn good one. What did he gain from letting information like this slip to Charon though? Charon was still a mostly nobody in the crime world, he couldn't go to anyone with a story that they'd believe. Charon just gained a small bit of information though, one he'd carry in his back pocket until a rainy day.

However, all thoughts of the Ripper left Charon's mind as this new statement was made. The Crimson Scar was proposing an alliance with Charon's group? That was...quite the offer should it be sincere. However, it could also be a trap. Some gangs liked to swallow smaller gangs by killing their leader; Charon of all people knew how that worked out. Charon's gang was too small and none of them had any powers to really justify the move though, leading him to believe that this was sincere.

"Well, I'd certainly be interested in meeting the man. I would of course come unarmed, though I would ask to meet at some kind of neutral location. Can't be too careful in our line of work yes?" Charon asked rhetorically. "So you must have some idea of what your father wants. I won't you to every word, but what kind of an offer is he planning on making me?"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:32 pm

Sam sat up a bit straighter and pushed his plate to the side, focusing more on the situation at hand. "First and foremost, we do not expect you to come to this alone. While it is customary for the leaders to be unarmed - Father will be leaving his sidearm at home - he will be taking two or three of his best men as escorts, who will likely be armed. I'm saying this now so you aren't caught off guard and can do the same. Father is a bit of a paranoid man when it comes to going out, and always has bodyguards these days. At this meeting, I expect that I will in fact be one of them." He takes a quick drink before continuing. "As for what he wants, the last time Father made this sort of deal, it a simple deal of aid and agreed growth. The gangs form a sort of trade group like corporations do, allowing both of our finances to grow. We designate areas where we can and can't peddle drugs and the like so neither is encroaching on the other's income. In the event of a gang war, the other party would come to aid. Fairly simple things like that. And the meeting would most likely take place in one of the resturaunts in Jadetown; neutral territory where if either side tries to cause a ruckus, it'll be noticed and whacked almost immediately."

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:36 pm

Fair enough and straight forward deal really. There was no reason to think that this had any ulterior motives. If they wanted Charon dead, they didn't need to go this far to set something up. Stories were only strong, but they wouldn't have anything solid on what Charon was capable of just yet. Eventually there would be a time when Charon could use his power freely, but for now it was his one advantage to keep a secret. Revealing it to someone that wasn't yet a friend would be foolishness.

"Saying no would be a stupid thing to do, and if there's anything I'm not it's stupid" Charon said casually. "Once you and your father decide on a date and time just inform me. I don't care what else I'm doing I'll be there with one or two other men. Course, if you plan on killing me my men aren't going to do much to stop you" Charon admitted. "The Crimson Scar is quite the bodyguard to have"

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by JollyLabyrinth Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:46 pm

Sam bowed his head and made a slight hand gesture, acknowledging the compliment. "Thank you for the compliment, sir. I guess I do have to acknowledge that you were right about the power that stories can have." He chuckles slightly and picks his plate and cup back up. "Father will be in touch. Until then, I highly doubt that you were here to chat with a streetside brawler. I look forward to seeing you again." He left the table, paid his check at the counter, and left the restaurant.
Sam wasn't entirely sure how he felt about the interaction. Charon gave off an air of calm and steady power, the kind of man who knows he has a place of power and is more than willing to use it. Something about the man didn't sit right with Sam, and it made him very uneasy. On top of that, he showed his hand to him, revealing a link with Maribelle, giving Charon that much more of a step on him. At the same time, maybe that link would play in Sam's and his gang's favor; if Charon was as dangerous as he seemed, having the Ripper looming over him would be a good way to keep him in line.
At the end of the day, however, he did Father's bidding. Father wanted to meet Charon, and now he was going to. This was going to get Sam some sort of bonus at least, and it meant that he helped his group, which was reward enough in it of itself. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling Charon was going to be nothing but bad news...

Fear, Blood, and Curry Empty Re: Fear, Blood, and Curry

Post by Charon Wed Jul 20, 2016 4:56 pm

"And I look forward to seeing you as well, take care of yourself" Charon said before raising his glass in respect, though still made no move to drink it. He watched as Sam walked away, reflecting on the whole meeting and what Charon could learn from it. The biggest takeaway was this possible alliance, which if sincere would benefit Charon far more than it would benefit Sam's group. For today at least. Along with that, the information that Sam knew something about the Ripper was huge news. At the very least, it was information that Charon would have to hold on to for when it would be useful. Figuring out the Ripper was female didn't exactly narrow down the possibilities of who she was.

In the midst of Charon's thoughts, two boys from a nearby table stood up after Sam left the door before approaching Charon. "Boss, what was all that about? For a minute there I thought we were going to have to get involved" they admitted. Truthfully Charon was meeting someone here, but he almost always had two of his members come to a location before hand to make sure everything was okay, and to act in his defense should any fights starts.

"I'm still not entirely sure boys....but be on your guard, things are going to get very interesting for us. I'm just not sure if that's a good thing yet"
