Rising Darkness Empty Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 2:22 am

Charon rode in the passenger seat as Mute drove their car, heading towards a location familiar to Mute over the past few weeks. It was the same fighting ring that Sam was associated with, and ever since Mute won his fight there he had been training there as well. It was a good facility, and one that needed no introduction. The place was famous for the fights and the fighters it pumped out. Mute did a decent job at representing Charon's gang a few weeks back, and he had been able to see Sam train first hand. The man was strong and smart, and his desire for growth was evident in his physical labor to become stronger. This was why Charon sought him out today.

They parked and Mute stepped out, leading Charon forward. As they walked in they got a few looks, as people recognized Mute and also started to piece together who the man walking beside him was. Ever since the take down of Cerberus and Mute's victory in the ring, stories had begun to circle in this area about Charon. However, this was the first time that he had actually come to the facility himself.

As they entered the main room, Mute pointed to a private ring where Sam was training. "Thanks Mute, I got it from here. Wait around in case he says no though" Charon said to which Mute only nodded before walking over to a nearby punching bag. Charon moved forward, hands in his pockets as he watched Sam training. "Even without an opponent you look rather fierce in the ring, you obviously take this extremely seriously" Charon said as he approached the edge. "Hope you don't mind an interruption"

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by JollyLabyrinth Thu Jul 28, 2016 2:35 am

The days were getting harder. People were finding less money in their pockets, and blame was starting to spread. The arguing was getting unbearable; Sam was paranoid of infighting starting, all over a bad shipment of ink. The stress was starting to get to him; he needed to clear his head. The ring was always a good place to do that; it was usually empty between fights, so a good place to hone his skills.
Sam was knee-deep in shadow boxing, sweat dripping off of him, when he heard a familiar voice. He jumped and turned to face it, more caught off guard than worried about an attack. "Jeez, you got light feet there..." Sam said as he stepped toward the edge of the ring. He grabbed a towel he hung on one of the corner posts and dabbed his forehead. "Of course I take it seriously. This stuff both earns my bread and saves my life. Not to mention its plain fun for me." He gave Charon his trademark wolf grin, a rare sight these days; he was genuinely enjoying himself for the first time in a long while. "Come to sign up for a fight? Might be able to talk Father into having a match with you. That'd get people talking." He laughed and leaped over the ropes and out of the ring. "So what's up, pretty boy? I doubt you're here to go toe-to-toe with me in the ring."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 11:40 am

"Kinda goes with my whole ensemble doesn't it?" Charon asked with a small smile through his mask. He was more about sneaking anyway, direct fights weren't particularly his specialty. His power put the mindset of a fight in his advantage, but now that he was becoming a bigger target Charon was starting to realize that thinking his way through a fight wasn't going to be enough. The time was coming where he'd have to fight, and he needed to be ready for that moment. If anyone attacked Father's gang in their weakened state Charon was expected to respond.

"Not quite yet,I don't think getting my face more messed up is what I had in mind just yet. I did come for some help though" Charon said as he walked over to Sam. "How much do you charge for training lessons, I want to learn how to fight and get in better shape"

Sam raised an eyebrow at Charon. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, you're telling me you want to learn how to fight from the Crimson Scar?" He smirked slightly. "Do you realize what you're asking." Casually, Sam leaned on the side of the ring. "If you want me to teach you, I'll damn well teach you. Even if it means I have to drag you by your hair back into the ring to sucker punch you. You pay me to train you, and there's no backing out for you. In addition, there's a few rules. When we're standing in this ring, I'm king. I'm aware you outrank me; I'm aware you're a friend of Father's. But I won't give two shits. You make a mistake once, I'm gonna call you out on it, humiliate you for it, but most importantly, correct it. If you make the same mistake twice, I'm gonna smack you."
Sam knew Charon would likely want to go through with this training; he was simply making the rules of training under him clear. As he spoke, he eyed Charon up and down; he was toned, sure, but hardly muscular. He'd have to put on some mass to become a legit threat in hand-to-hand combat, even if he did pick up what Sam taught him quickly. "Due to tough times, my price is gonna be a bit higher: a thousand for the opening lesson. Normally six hundred, my typical fee for running a job, but hey, you already said you were willing to go up that high." He smirked. "Subsequent lessons will be three hundred. And as I said, I'm fully expecting you to be back for more if I take you on."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 1:08 pm

"Rank doesn't mean anything at the end of the day. A kid with a knife in the right place can kill the leader of Earth, his rank doesn't save him" Charon remarked. He knew that Sam was just making his rules clear, but Charon didn't need a pep talk. Life had been hard and cruel as it was, there was nothing that Sam could do that would be worse than what Charon had already gone through a hundred times before. He needed to be ready for when those worse days came, when his enemies would do everything they could to put Charon in the ground. Charon knew that rank wasn't going to mean anything, it certainly didn't save the last few leaders that Charon killed, strength was what mattered in this world.

Charon reached in to his pocket before throwing a small stack of hundreds to Sam for him to catch. "Yeah, had a feeling you'd say that after the last time I hired you" Charon said before turning to Mute and nodding his head. Mute returned the nod before turning and leaving. "Mute will be in charge of my operations while I train with you, he's the only one I trust to see things like this through. He was the one that recommended I come here and approach you"

Sam caught the bills and glanced over at Mute. Recommended? What, does Charon know sign language? Guess that makes sense, his right hand man being unable to talk and all... He looked back to Charon and nodded. "Alright then. Hop into the ring with me and we can get started. Also, I recommend taking off the shirt; if you're working out right, you'll probably ruin it." Sam hopped into the ring and turned around to face Charon. He smirked and put his hands behind his back. "First thing's first: I need to know where you stand right now. I'm gonna give you thirty seconds to show me what you've got. I won't throw a single punch back. You go to town on me and I'll know what we're working with. And don't hold back; I'm pretty sure I can handle whatever you're dishing out."
In truth, Sam had no intention of getting hit a single time during these thirty seconds he was giving Charon; the most important part of boxing was being able to dodge a punch, while the second most important part was being able to land one. Both of these involved speed and agility, as well as a bit of unpredictability. Sam stayed light on his toes, ready to dodge everything Charon would throw his way. That said, he was going to refrain from using his powers so Charon would actually have a chance and so be able to improve.

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 1:45 pm

Charon was a bit hesitant as he moved in to the ring, but he knew that he needed to do as Sam said if this was going to work. If he questioned anything it'd only make this harder on both of them. Charon was paying Sam, but Sam was still doing a favor by doing this for Charon. The man nodded before removing his shirt. As Sam suspected his chest was well toned, but Sam would also see the numerous amounts of burns, scars and general deformities over Charon's body. It wasn't anything that would inhibit him, but Sam would see there was a reason that Charon didn't lay out at the beach too often.

Charon took a ready position, forming his fists and standing ready as Sam told him to attack. Charon moved forward, starting to swing and strike at Sam. Charon had fought before, but it was usually with guns or knives in some fashion. Straight hand to hand wasn't his specialty and he knew that. Charon knew that his fighting was likely sloppy and full of holes, but he mainly wanted training to just get strong and fast. Technique could get acquired later.

Post by JollyLabyrinth Thu Jul 28, 2016 1:56 pm

Sam casually leaned and ducked out of the way of Charon's strikes, at one point putting in a dramatic yawn to rub it into his pupil; he always found humiliation was a good way to anger people, and people pushed themselves harder when they were angry at something. At one point around the twenty second mark, Sam got sloppy with his dodging, letting Charon get a solid punch on his scarred bicep. It had power, but hardly enough to stagger him. At the thirty second mark, Sam blocked the next incoming punch with his right arm and firmly pushed Charon back with his left. "Sloppy." He barked as he did. "You fight like Mute does; slow, telegraphed punches you're putting all of your power behind. The difference is Mute has the body mass to do that; comparatively, you've got jack. But first, we need to work on your stance." Sam raised his fists and spread his legs a bit, demonstrating his stance. "First and foremost is the feet. You've got them too close. You have no balance. I'd just have to slap you to knock you to the ground. Wider stance means harder to knock over. Keep them about shoulder width apart, one inch wider at most. Need to stay mobile." Once Charon did this, Sam would nod. "Working our way up: Knees. Bend a bit more. You're a smaller target, so let's work with that. Bent knees means a sturdier base and a smaller target, making you harder to hit and harder to push around when you do. Straighten your back, you look you're auditioning for Quasimodo. Elbows tucked into your body, easier to defend from there and lets your punches be quicker. Fists, to be honest, are pretty good."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 2:03 pm

"Yeah? I've been throwing punches before I was shooting bullets" Charon said as he worked to adjust his body to everything else. It was true, when he first started in a gang he didn't have his own gun. HE had to learn how to punch and hurt people with nothing but his hands. At the very least he knew how to punch without injuring himself. Charon's initial test to enter a gang was to fight a former member that had been caught stealing money. Charon defeated him in a fist fight before being ordered to kill him. Charon drove his thumbs through the man's eyes and into his brain, securing his position in the gang.

Charon was doing his best to adapt to what Sam wanted him to do, but sometimes in the heat of throwing punches or strikes his legs would move back to what Charon was comfortable with. "Damn it" Charon said to himself, catching himself as he realized what he was doing. He had been fighting "wrong" for most of his life, so it was hard to adjust now. Still though, he was listening and taking this seriously. Even for Charon's position a thousand dollars from his personal account wasn't anything light, Sam would know that he was trying his hardest to adjust and learn from Sam. "Come on, I'm ready keep your instructions coming" Charon said as he threw out a few more punches while trying to maintain this new stance.

Sam nodded; Charon was slipping back to his previous stances on occasion, but that was to be expected. Old habits die hard, but Sam had a reputation for killing them. Still, he was improving better than Sam had anticipated. "Roll your body with the punches." Sam threw a few to demonstrate, rolling his shoulders and upper half of his body as he threw each punch. "Puts the power you want behind them and a bit more speed." He turned to Charon. "Go ahead and hit me with one, right in the chest. Won't dodge you this time, need to gauge your strength." Sam stood with his hands behind his back again; he was keeping his eyes on Charon's stance and technique, and braced himself for the punch.

Charon nodded, appreciating the fact that Sam was demonstrating. For someone in the business they could absolutely follow but Charon couldn't necessary follow. Thankfully seeing Sam work his body over was enough for Charon to feel confident that he could mimic it. Charon practiced throwing the punches a few times to make sure that he got it down. Once he felt ready he turned to Sam and braced himself before moving forward and launching his fist forward, aiming to strike Sam as hard as he could. It might not necessarily be that strong, but at least it was better than what Charon had been doing.

Sam noted that Charon's technique was improving; still, his pupil lacked strength. He hardly staggered from the punch, his foot only moving back an inch to stabilize himself; granted, he was cheating and utilizing his blood powers to keep himself sturdy, but he needed to anger his pupil, see how hard he could fight in an actual dangerous situation. "Again." He ordered. "Actually hit me this time. That was pathetic." As the punches kept coming, he continued to fortify himself, hardly moving, after each punch commanding "AGAIN!" Some punches in, he locked eyes with Charon. "Come on, pretty boy. You pride yourself on fear, but right now you're hitting like a school girl. Give me a reason to fear you. Give me a reason."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 2:29 pm

Charon knew that he had a lot to work on, but very few people talked down to Charon anymore...at least those that knew him personally. He kept throwing punches, but he was starting to get more irritated as Sam kept mocking and pushing him. Finally though, he said that damn name again. Sam called him Pretty Boy. Charon looked up in to Sam's eyes and locked with them for a moment. Charon activated his power.

Suddenly, Sam would see his mother outside of the ring. IT would be brief, but he'd see her as a man approached her from behind and pulled a knife across her throat, blood now spilling on to the ground as her body went limp. Charon took this moment of distraction to launch a hard punch right in to Sam's face, aiming to knock him down and just hurt him as much as he could. "Don't you dare fucking call me Pretty Boy again"

Sam's stomach dropped when he saw his mother. How is she here? She died... She's dead! It was impossible... It was disheartening. She would be so upset with him; she raised him right, better than to fall in with this sort of crowd. Then he saw the man.
He couldn't see who it was; her red hair was in the way. But he saw the knife. He saw it slide effortlessly across her throat. Sam's powers fell off for a moment as he stared, fully focused on the scene. He was about to leap out of the ring to tackle the man, grab him, crush his head like an eggshell, turn him to soup, ANYTHING, when suddenly the punch came. A solid, powerful blow to the side of his nose that sent Sam spiraling to the ground. As he fell, the pieces came together.
Charon.
Cheap shot. In multiple ways. He stood up and put his finger to his nose; no blood. He was getting good at stopping injuries before they started. He looked eyes Charon, this time filled with anger and not fear. He delivered a fast and powerful right hook to the man, likely sending him to the ground regardless of his stance. After the punch and a moment to recompose himself, he spoke. "Good form. Hitting them where they don't expect it. Utilizing your powers in the heat of a fight. Punch well delivered, good stance. Improving already." His voice was cold, hostile, angry despite his words. "Never pull that shit on me again, or else I'll give you a good reason to not be called pretty boy. Y'know what, no, no cagey threat today. You pull that shit again, and you won't get up from the next punch. Dead. Straight dead, understand? That's my god damn mother. You have beef with me? That's fine. But don't drag her into this."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Post by Charon Thu Jul 28, 2016 3:04 pm

The trick had worked and Sam went down to the ground. He wasn't knocked out or anything like that, but he had managed to hurt Sam at the very least. It had been a stupid decision to anger someone so much physically stronger than Charon, but he was mad. Ever since his father he hated to have people talk down to him. In the early days of the gang it had been necessary to let others talk down to him, but that had been some time ago. Charon was successful, and he was powerful in his own way. Who was Sam to talk down to him like that, to treat him like a nobody? Charon couldn't let that go.

WHAM!

Charon felt the punch and fell back, only barely landing on his knees and using one of his hands to stop himself from falling completely on the mat. Sam had been doing this for a long time, a clear indication from that last punch. Charon could barely hear what Sam was saying as his head was ringing too loudly from the blow of the hit. He got enough to get the message though. Charon started to push himself up, but Sam would see that Charon's legs were shaky and uneven. That being said, Charon did get back up though. He wasn't planning on stopping for anything, not even a death threat.

"You leave my looks out of this, I leave your mom out and don't use my powers on you. Seems fair" Charon said as he slowly raised his fists back up. "You made me mad...gotta say most people don't get under my skin like that, but I lost my temper" Charon said quietly as his one eye locked with Sam's. "Push me in whatever way you need to Sam...but leave my face out of it, that's my only demand. Hit me, hurt me all you want. Escort me an inch within the gates of Hell and I'll take it...but don't talk about my face and don't call me Pretty Boy. No one gets to talk about my face, nobody" Charon said as he stood ready. "Come on, I'm ready"

Sam nodded. "You go ahead an use your powers a bit when I give you permission to; I'm teaching you how to fight like you would on the streets, and I assume you'd use them there. Just don't... Do that." He took a breath to calm himself. "Fix your stance. Legs are too far apart. Got stability, but you've lost all mobility." He ordered, his tone much less light-hearted than before. Once he did, Sam put his hands behind his back. "You got the stance and know how to throw a punch. All that's pointless if you can't land a hit on me, and that was a big issue earlier. Let's try again. Thirty seconds of you swinging, you get one gulp of water for each hit you land. Predict my movements, fake me out, herd me into your punches. No powers for this exercise; just your raw strength and speed."

Landing hits, yeah that was a good place to start. What was the point of being powerful if you couldn't even hit someone once? Charon just nodded before moving forward, aiming to throw and try to throw punch after punch. Due to your last hit though Charon's hits weren't as effective as they were before. After a few misses Charon tries to use his legs in order to hold one of your legs in place before launching a blow forward. It wasn't the best, but Charon was desperate to try and show that he wasn't just some nobody. He wanted this to work, and he wanted to take any lesson that Sam had for him.

Sam dodged with ease at first, no blows landing in the beginning, but then Charon tried some fancy footwork. It was frankly a poor play given Sam's superior strength, as if it was a proper fight he could easily use the poor positioning to knock Charon off balance. But this wasn't a fight, so Sam had to do a bit of fancy jumping and diving of his own to create distance. A hit landed. "One." Sam called out; Charon's form was improving. Three more hits landed before the time was up, each time Sam calling out the next number. At the thirty second mark, again, Sam blocked the next attack with his forearm and pushed Charon back. "Four hits. You get four gulps of water." He walked over to his corner of the ring and tossed his water bottle to Charon. They'd been training for almost fifteen minutes now, and while it wasn't the most rigorous, Sam had no doubt that Charon was getting thirsty. Besides, Sam needed a moment to clear his head. "Four gulps, then toss the bottle back to me."

Charon could already feel the beads of sweat forming on his forehead and back. The mask certainly didn't help when it came to keeping his face cool. Still, it was far better than taking it off and freaking everyone nearby out. Charon would rather not be disturbed by the screams of a bunch of paranoid weight-lifters. Charon felt his blows going more smoothly, he had a long way to go but he felt he was starting to learn what Sam was trying to teach him. The blows were becoming more powerful and fast.

Charon took the four gulps he was allotted before putting the cap on and tossing it over to Sam. Charon rested against the edge of the ring while Sam drank. "Hey" he called over once Sam was done drinking. "I'm sorry about using your mother like that...it wasn't cool" Charon said. "I got frustrated and took it out on you, I won't do that again. I of all people should have known that went too far" Charon added. He knew that he had already apologized, but Sam had been helpful since Charon first joined Father, so Charon wanted to make sure that things were at least decent between them. The life they lived was hard enough for them to start turning on each other.

Sam caught the water bottle and put it down next to his stool again. "I appreciate the apology." He muttered, sitting down. "Just... Bit of restraint is all. I've seen her die once before; don't need to see it again."
His face grew dark as his mind wandered back to those dark days; waiting by his mother's bedside for her to fall asleep, paranoid that she would never wake up. Tuberculosis was something that she had been battling for a long time, but they never had the money to afford any sort of medicine. He remembered the day she died too well; it was beautiful outside, the sun bright, there was a festival in Ruby Central... He came home after getting food to find her coughing again, worse than normal... He had run to hold her, to try and calm her down.
She died in his arms that day.
Sam stared forward blankly as the scene replayed in his head. After a moment, he looked up. "What's your mother like?" He whispered, his voice uncharacteristically soft and shaky. Thoughts of his mother always had him questioning his life choices; she had raised him to be a better man than what he had become.

"Don't really know" Charon said and tried to leave it at that. After a moment of silence he looked up and saw that Sam was giving him a look that indicated he wanted more information, he apparently wasn't going to just let it slide. Yeah, after what Charon did he supposed that he owed Sam the truth at least. "I haven't seen her in about six years. Dad wasn't the most patient man, but he was one of the cruelest" Charon began before pointing a finger to the side of his mask that covered his injuries. "He did that to me".

"I always thought that mom and I would leave together at some point, she'd divorce him or dad would calm down and we'd be a happy family again. She left in the middle of the night when I was young though, left me with him and made no attempt to get in touch with me ever since....she could be dead in a gutter for all I know. I doubt she's even still in this city"

Sam sat silently for a moment. He didn't know what to say or how to respond to that. At least Sam's father didn't stick around to give him false hope. He shook his head, not wanting to say anything that could antagonize the situation. He stood up. "I'm... Sorry to hear that. Anyways, we need to focus on what you paid me for." Sam raised his fists. "First and most important rule of a fight: Fights rarely go back and forth. Whoever wins in the first fifteen seconds will almost always win the entire fight. Go forward, push into them." He cracked his neck slightly. "You're getting better at landing hits, now you gotta learn how to take a punch. At the start of a fight, if you dodge like what I've been doing, you're wasting a lot of those precious first fifteen seconds. Block the hit, counterattack. Block, counter. I'm gonna start throwing punches, you punish me for it. No powers on either of us yet."

Rising Darkness Empty Re: Rising Darkness

Charon just nodded, happy that Sam didn't choose to offer Charon any sense of false hope or well wishes about his mother. He was sorry, and that was plenty in their line of work. Emotion usually got you killed in a business like this, and Charon had no interest in dying. Charon cracked his neck before facing Sam and getting in to a ready stance once again. He heard the rules and just gave a firm nod. Sam was going to try and attack Charon, he merely had to block or avoid the attacks and make sure to punish Sam as much as he could for it. Seemed simple enough, though with everything it'd be far more complex than it sounded.

Sam nodded and quickly stepped forward, acting as an aggressive attacker; wide hooks to the side of the head, quick body shots, attempting to capitalize whenever Charon left himself open for more than a second. He dipped into none of his powers for throwing punches, only fortifying his internal workings so he could take the punches and continue his assault.

Charon wasn't a born fighter like Sam was. He was smart and had fought for a portion of his life, but Sam got in to the ring on several nights to make his living. It was a world that Charon didn't know yet, but he could learn quickly. Charon moved his body to dodge, weave in attacks, attempting blocks to the head and punishing Sam by hitting him in the stomach. Sam wasn't using his powers, but even his natural physique was stronger than Charon's, so every blow he landed was doing more to Charon than they were to him. Charon continued the pace for as well as he could though, aiming to mix up his moves so Sam didn't find him predictable. It likely wouldn't work, but Charon had to learn now how to throw his enemies off. If he projected every move, anyone stronger than him would tear him apart.
