Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Black Bishop takes White Knight

"Where'd they find him?" An unfamiliar female voice asked, it was so bright he couldn't see, even though the light rose and fell and Roy could feel the warm wet pour down his face. He could hear mumbling, mechanical sounds and could make out the squeaking of wheels and subtle beeping of electrical equipment. "In a dumpster in West Citrine Neighborhood." It was a similarly alien voice that responded back. "He's been in and out of consciousness the whole rid...." It all faded away again.

The kid in the stained red-white clothing clawed again, grasped at the land of the living as he felt the darkness fall over him again. He wanted to hold on a little longer. He had to hang in there. He didn't want to be beaten like this. Didn't want to fall back into that darkness, as that darkness contained that man, he could feel that man's hands around his ankles dragging him down, down into the blackness. He didn't want to be there, that man would strangle the life out of him there. Roy could kick and scream and beg but couldn't win. He wanted it so badly, he wanted to live!

Roy gasped awake, His entire body fought against the straps on the operating table. "Administer another dose! He's a super remember! Get him back under! STAT!" A doctor yelled his orders as the white haired young man thought he was still in the life and death struggle in his nightmares. He thrashed about and squirmed and suddenly it was over again and the darkness reached up and pulled him in again by the throat!

When the shadows released him yet again Roy's return to the light was more peaceable. He opened his eyes, but no more than a squint, his body shook for a moment still under restraint on the table. Though now they were a lot more loose, he could feel his freedom of movement if he was only constrained to the bed. The light was still too bright and everything hurt. His head throbbed, no his entire body. He struggled again and the dull throbbing pain that was everywhere turned to a sharp stabbing pain everywhere causing him to shudder uncontrollably, before his body finally wore itself out and he fell back to unconsciousness  once again.

This cycle repeated itself for a few hours before the doctor increased his dose of pain medications in response to the chain reaction. Roy Wulf was in a sad state. Though on the last one, he could hear a familiar female voice. It was Jia, mom. His mind floated to more simple things like if the doctor heckled her like all the others did about being his mother, or more so being his guardian, most didn't believe her until he'd call on her as his mother. She had after all taken care of him since his early childhood.

It'd been three days since then. Roy had finally gotten up the courage to speak with his mother, she didn't even go home to sleep, only step out long enough to eat and maybe get a shower, one of the luxuries of the first world she enjoyed was having hot water at her fingertips at all times. She'd adapted so well to first world living that one wouldn't know that a few years ago she was a Tanzanian farmer's wife in a house with no running water or indoor plumbing.

Roy had taken a beating and in those odd moment between wake and sleep he could swear he heard her crying, but whenever he addressed his mother she was clear eyed and smiling. His father, Tanar, had stopped by from time to time between working, it seemed like every moment he wasn't sleeping or working he stopped into the hospital. The school had already been informed for a leave of absence, and thanks to his own apology to the anesthesiologist who he threw into a cart, and the sweet begging of a worried mother Roy's restraints had been removed.

He'd spoken with the RPD investigators and a Superhero Foundation representative who both took his story, though he'd left out the reason why he was in that part of town to begin with. They'd identified the man that Roy had tangled with as a heavy hitter known solely as Charon. The face in his nightmares finally had a name, and it was as equally terrifying when your wraiths had names of their own.

The young hero had already started on his road to recover having recieved a new phone, though he didn't know what happened to his old one had gone missing, thankfully the phone salesman had convinced Tanar of getting the comprehensive phone insurance. Though his hands hurt he'd managed to text Books and a few other people to let them know he was at Saint Beacon Medical Center and not to worry and to visit because while he had his mother he'd enjoy company more his age. He knew exactly how bad it looked from the mirror he'd asked from a nurse it looked pretty horrible, bandages everywhere, head face neck, body, arms legs. Everything that wasn't covered in bandages was black and blue. The thugs that'd dumped him decided to lay on a little extra hurt, having not had his fill from taking it out on his poor bike.

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Seeing as she'd been one of the first to hear of Roy's unfortunate run-in with one of the most notorious criminals in the entire city, Arachna would also be one of his first visitors. She'd arrive even before he'd begun sending out texts to his fellow students that he'd managed to get himself hospitalized.

She walked into his room at a leisurely pace, arms sternly crossed over her half-exposed bosom, ignoring the woman she assumed was his mother to stand at his bedside and cast him a stern glare heated enough to melt ice in a second. Her slippery smile was nowhere to be seen for the moment as she gave him her best 'I know exactly how you got here and I'm not happy with you' look. She didn't even deign to share the first words, instead waiting for Roy to think of what to say to her first.

If his mother attempted to intervene in his stead, Arachna would attempt to quickly shush her by raising a hand to silently motion her to cease.

Jia wouldn't intercede on Roy's behalf simply standing and warmly greeting a woman she recognized as Miss Polzin from her son's description, thanking her for coming. Thanks to Roy's describing the woman, it wasn't quite as big a shock as it might have been if she'd not heard of the teacher before. When your son was able to create any shape you could think of Arachna wasn't a stretch for Jia. Though it was obvious, maybe not at first, this was a reckoning, Jia would respect her son's privacy and his decisions and leave the teacher that made her hair stand on end with a little bow and quickly closed the door behind herself.

It would be silent as Roy looked up at Ms. Polzin. He would look away to the open window, he really didn't need this right now. "I guess I look really stupid right now." It was an honest and humble opening choked out by a boy forcefully admitted to a hospital. Roy was well aware of his position, and the right of his teacher to say how she'd told him that he was a loose cannon. He wasn't proud that he'd been put here, but he wasn't at all full of shame and regret.

"If you've the insight to realize how stupid this is, you should've had the insight to flee the moment you realized you were outmatched. You ignored every scrap of good advice I offered to you and pissed off one of the most notorious criminal leaders known to be at large today."

She sighed and reached up to rub at her eye. She hadn't been getting nearly enough sleep lately, but she needed to seem like she really cared about what was happening in the school if channels of communication were going to remain open to her. One could find the best information from the least likely sources, Roy here being a good example of that.

"I want you to think about just how fortunate you are to be in this hospital bed rather than a morgue. Someone like Charon could've easily had bits of your body scattered all around the city if he'd had the mind to and it's only by the good fortune of finding him in a good mood that you're lying here today. I'm sure you've got friends already on the way to see your mummy-wrapped self. I want you to take in their expressions and imagine how much worse it could've been if they were looking down on your grave instead. The thought of inflicting pain on others through your own death obviously didn't affect you much before, but maybe it'll make you more cautious once you've gotten a taste of anguish. You need to be more careful and choose your battles much more wisely from now on."

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Post by Mercury Wed Sep 14, 2016 8:57 pm

Roy didn't bother looking at Arachna she was right, his mother had practically sobbed over him when she thought his lights were out. He didn't want her to relive that. He felt a pain in his chest as Ms Polzin spoke about him being in the morgue and how much it would effect everyone.

"I thought before, that I understood what you meant." Roy's words were very slowly selected, "I thought I was careful, I thought I selected a fight that was within my abilities. When I stepped up to those thugs pushing that guy around for money, then ignoring me, I thought that I could beat them easily enough and I did. Then Charon showed up and I thought I could take him too. I..." His voice shook and he went silent for a moment, he breathed to calm himself down, "I thought I could take him too. I was too high on my victory over his thugs to even think that he could be much more of a problem. He was faster, stronger, smarter, and his power." Roy visibly shivered as if recalling what had happened after Charon took off his mask.

The white haired young man looked back out the window. "I think I understand now. What you were saying before. What you're saying now. But how do you take on someone like that? Charon... needs to be stopped."

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Post by Arachna Wed Sep 14, 2016 9:36 pm

Arachna was quick to shake her head as it seemed that Roy was falling straight into the same mind trap that had led him to his current situation.

"Not by you. Leave this to someone more capable and with more experience. Even if you hone your power and become even stronger, he'll also undoubtedly have become stronger as well. Pursuing this foolish quest for justice will just end in your own death with no benefit for anyone at all. I've fought him before, myself, and it was an unpleasant experience even for me. Don't let what you can't accomplish make you lose sight of what you can."

Her words cut Roy fairly deeply, as though she was telling him never to try to push his limits. That was something he could not accept, everything he'd done, football and the Fencing and the Kendo had told him to always push his limits always to strive and push your opponents.

But none of those things had ever put him in the hospital. Maybe Arachna was right. "So you're saying keep it to thugs and bangers and leave the super villains to the Foundation?" He wanted to be absolutely sure that was what she was telling him.

"I'm telling you to know when you should fold." She wasn't about to humor his attempt to fish from her a roundabout response that he should join the Superhero Foundation before taking another crack at it. "There was a point where you realized you couldn't win. Getting a little beat up and being beaten within an inch of death are two very different beasts. You could have just sacrificed your life for no gain. You still sacrificed your health for no gain and anyone who may have been involved in whatever Charon was doing likely suffered double what they would've had you not riled him up. Clutch victories happen in comic books, but we're dealing with reality and if you keep the attitude you've got right now you'll find yourself in an early grave. And if you continue to refuse to use your brain encased in that thick skull of yours I'll personally see to it as an instructor in the SAFE program that you be barred from joining the Superhero Foundation under grounds of your own safety."

Now it just felt like she was patronizing him for agreeing with her, he wouldn't even look at Ms. Polzin. "I knew I couldn't when when I was thrown through a plate glass window. It's a little late to get up and run away when you can't move." Roy responded coldly keeping his eyes on the window, the blinds were drawn but it was a better place to look than the spider woman's venom filled glare.

If he'd have known that she was going to be this useless as a mentor and guide he'd never have gone to her in the first place. She'd told him to be careful, now he got it and she was just sadistically rubbing salt in his wounds.

"Maybe then I'll just have to build my own crew, and take Charon and anyone else down that you or the foundation are too afraid to touch." He was pulling away from Arachna and becoming spiteful. If she wanted to turn him away from the path she thought was dangerous she was doing a very poor job of it. "If you don't have any other sage wisdom, get lost."

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Arachna sighed in exasperation. She was really not used to talking to kids like this.

"Look, all I'm saying is that sometimes you need to look at a conflict from a different perspective. Keeping yourself alive is a lot more helpful to people than sacrificing yourself for whatever cause you've decided to follow. You can have a vendetta against Charon, join the foundation, chase him down and die as he crushes your throat... or you can actually help people by sticking to conflicts that you know you can win and make a real difference. I'm asking you to forget about Charon. He isn't your fight."

It was fair to say that Roy wasn't used to talking to people from his back , practically strapped to a bed. There was some amount of physical vulnerability that seeped into emotional vulnerability, when you knew you couldn't even stand to greet someone there was just something that clicked off, a sort of ego shield that made every word thrown carelessly stick deeply. It was simple to say that Arachna had been careless in what she said and how she said it, that made Roy spiteful.

That said.

"You say that like I went there looking for Charon by name." Roy responded turning his head a little, to get a better view of Ms Polzin. "It just happened. I can't say I won't go all out if we cross paths again, though its unlikely. I'm not going to go looking for the man right as soon as I'm out of here, or in the near future. If that's what you're worried about, then don't be bothered." He would look away from Arachna. "But I don't think I can forget something-someone like that on demand."

"You went there looking for information about those wristbands, I'd wager. It doesn't take a genius to realize that there's no small time criminals behind their manufacture. You were looking for trouble, but trouble found you instead. Leave the case to people like me and just keep cleaning up whatever amateur power users leak out. That's what you can do right now... when you're cleared to leave the hospital." She paused for a moment, her expression softening ever so slightly before turning to leave. "Anyways, I'll have to take your word that you're not going to go on another suicidal trip the moment you leave the hospital. Don't make me regret not tying you down."

She took a step to leave just as a rather formally dressed butler strolled through the door bearing an envelope and a basket.

"Ms. Spada regrets that she couldn't make it to see you, Mr. Wulf." The butler spoke up, but hesitated once he realized that Roy was hardly in any position to be receiving gifts or opening envelopes. "Erm... I'll just set these aside for you to open at your leisure." And that's exactly what he did, setting the basket and envelope carefully on a provided surface for gifts. "Please, get well soon, sir." He gave a bow and was off once again. He had other stops after all.

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Post by Mercury Fri Sep 16, 2016 5:26 am

It was all Roy could muster to lift his arm slowly and wave a farewell to Arachna as she left in the slow sultry slink that was defined by her femme-fatal archetype. "You're right. I'll stick to the broken window theory of being a hero." That said that he was one of the people who worked on taking care of the small things so that more experienced heroes could take care of the big things without having to sweat the small stuff.

Then the man in the suit stopped in and practically tossed a gift, mentioned Diamante and shot out of the door before Roy could ask the man any questions. "Thanks Jeeves." Roy called to the man as he shuffled out the door busily. He would use the only available flesh on his hands, his pinky, to tap a "Thank You for the gifts." Into his phone and hit the send button.

That would be when Jia returned, having thanked Ms Polzin for stopping in and taking such an interest in Roy's development as a Hero, and going out of her way to try and steer the boy to a higher path. She'd obviously been listening from the Hall. She bade the spider-woman fare-well and then entered her son's room looking at the basket and smiling. "Oh your first get-well-soon gift." She spoke in a heavily accented English, unlike Tanar she'd known the language well enough to get by on arrival and her skills hadn't improved much since arriving years ago.

Picking up the Envelope the ebony skinned woman snaked a fingernail into the packaging and slid it across the top of the letter practically opening it one smooth rip, before pulling out the letter and reading it to her son, hoping there would be some juicy insight into the young boy's life, it was hand written AND it was from a Miss, not a Mister or some sort of mysterious benefactor. It seemed that Roy had a female friend with beautiful handwriting and a lot of money on her hands. Maybe he'd marry into a rich family some day.

Hey, a mother could dream.

"Lets see here." She would begin to read the letter aloud for Roy. After she read it she would delve into the basket to present the contents to her son.

The basket was full of various herbal teas, mostly carefully selected mixes of the highest quality that promoted health and well-being. Obviously Dia was thinking about Roy's good health when she chose her get well gift.

The letter was a generic sort of flowery get well card one would normally buy from a grocery or drug store, but the blank side read as such in Dia's carefully neat handwriting:

Dear Mr. Wulf,

I apologize that I won't be able to make it to the hospital to see you in person, but I hope that this gift and my well wishes from a distance will be the next best thing. I hope to see you at school soon. If you'd like to speak over the phone feel free to call me at any time.

With Love,

Jia read the letter out loud and even emoted at the part that said "With Love." Before smiling. "Oh my little boy is growing up so fast I'm so proud of you. You're becoming such a big boy, oh... I mean a fine young man!" He mother would continue her mother-pride fueled rambling. Something about girlfriends and protection, all good embarrassing stuff that mothers tend to spout, that their sons would rather not revisit, and noted about how much she would like to meet this Diamante as soon as Roy was well enough to introduce her.

Roy raised an awkward eyebrow at his mother's doting to try and let her know that his and Diamante's relationship wasn't like what his mom was thinking. Dia was classy and though they'd hit it off as friends there were obviously no feelings of romance there. He wanted to explain to his mother exactly that. However he couldn't get an edge in word-wise, only managing to get out a single syllable before his mother would continue to ramble over him, frustrating the temporarily physically disabled boy to no end.

The young man couldn't very well call Dia with his mother ranting she'd want to talk to the girl and with her misinformation she'd surely make his friendship with Dia an uneasy one.

Then his mother made a decision on her own to brew up the tea as quickly as possible and have Roy drink it. She would quickly pull the tea from the bag and try to track down a way to steep the wonderful tea so her son could partake of the lovely and thoughtful gift!

As she left Roy gave an exasperated sigh. This was becoming exhausting.

Black Bishop takes White Knight Empty Re: Black Bishop takes White Knight

Post by Haruko Tue Sep 20, 2016 5:33 am

It wasn't long after her departure that the sound of slowly jogging footsteps sounded up the hall, quickly followed by them passing the door Roy was in, then suddenly stopping and doubling back before Haruko and her shockingly red hair poked her head in through the door to see if she was in the right room. "Uh..." she sounded off loud enough for Roy to hear her, but not loud enough that it might disturb someone who wasn't Roy. "Roy...?" she inquired. Obviously she couldn't recognize him in all his bandaged glory. She narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing the details in an attempt to find some detail that aligned with her memory that would identify him as her recently acquired friend.

Not that her memory could really be trusted anyways. If she hadn't kept the text he'd sent her on her phone it was likely she would've just wandered the halls forever wondering where he was if she'd even remembered to come visit him at all.

"Hi Haruko!" Roy greeted happily as the the matchstick leaned into his room, and questioningly addressed him, he was covered almost from head to toe in bandages. So it was all understood and forgivable, even his own mother could make that mistake, not saying she did...

But she did.

Either way, Roy was almost overjoyed to have company, spending time with dear old mom was beginning to wear thin, though he still appreciated the love his mother showed.

"How are you doing?" He wanted to keep the conversation on his newest visitor, it'd been a few weeks since they'd met in the theme park where they'd spent the afternoon together. "I have to apologize I'm going to have to take a rain-check on that sparring match. Perhaps the next-next-time we meet we'll get to throw down."

"Shyeah!" Haruko chuckled now that she was certain she'd found the right room. She strolled in casually and made herself at home, pulling up one of the nearby chairs to take a seat at his side and kick back in relaxation. "Wayda get the shit kicked out of you in an attempt to escape a beating from yours truly! You look like you went ten rounds with a freight train full of blueberries and mummies! Better hope it doesn't affect those boyish good looks of yours," she grinned cheekily.

"As for me, I'm doing alright. ...A lot better than you for sure. I decided I didn't feel like sitting around in school so I took a nap in the park and then went for a jog. Ya know... you'd think people would be a pest about how I should be in school, but they really don't care. It's kind of refreshing."

Roy smiled when Haruko greeted him, and talked about how he got the crap kicked out of him in such a jovial manner, he was reminded that it could have been worse, but wasn't. He was grateful, the last two visitors had been fairly negative or mostly neutral on the subject. "Oh don't think this cancel's our contest Haruko. I just felt like making you wait for it." He teased back, though it was obvious that his hospital time was completely out of his control.

"Yeah, I skip Mister Greensworth's class all the time. Sanctimonious bastard preaches more than teaches." Roy paused for a moment taking the time to analyze what Haruko said. "Boy, you sure are a free spirit aren't you? I mean you just do whatever you feel like doing. I wish I could be more like that."

"You don't?" Haruko brought her eyes back from gazing at the ceiling tiles to give Roy a doubting look. "You don't really seem tied down to me... at least not figuratively... right now... ... ... ... You know. Either way," she started again after that long thought of corrections concerning the difference between his physical and mental states. "I really doubt you were playing by the rules when you challenged that grizzly bear to a life or death cage battle."

She was starting to lose him at first, but as she continued on Roy did his best to cock his head, she was right, now that he wasn't a part of any clubs anymore, and his path to professional athlete was gone there wasn't much holding him down anymore. Outside of what he physically could or couldn't do.

"Yeah I guess you're right." He got what she meant, they were both free of any responsibility right now outside of their own whims. "But, I guess when I was taught to fight, the rules were always very important, none of the sport fighting I did prepared me for taking that guy on. I really need to change how I fight if I'm gonna get the leg up on guys like him."

"Winning a ranked match is one thing," Haruko answered casually with a flick of her wrist. "You've got a guy there watching the fight and you have rules and like... ceremonial crap and there's supposed to be mutual respect for your opponent. You gotta shove all that to the side when you're street fighting. This didn't occur to you when Vanilla was trying to ice you? She couldn't have been adhering to any strict rules if she was trying to turn you into a meat popsicle."

"No it didn't occur to me." Roy admitted flatly, "We were slugging it out like, kind of like boxing at first, but then things got out of hand, then the fight was broken up and over before I could really understand what happened and I never thought back to it that Anna was trying to kill me."

Really, Roy had a few close calls in his life recently. Now that he thought about it, people were taking advantage of the rules of combat, of the respect and restraint he was showing them. He'd have to put a stop to that.

"I see what you mean. Maybe I was just being Naive." Now Roy was beginning to see the error of his ways and it made him feel like a fool.

"Let's spar once you're not going to hurt yourself too bad from getting back into fighting. I'll show you some of the finer points of street fighting, alright?" She grinned in Roy's direction before returning to staring at the ceiling tiles. "You'll learn to adapt pretty quickly. Combat is an entirely different philosophy out in the wilds of the world. Kill or be killed. Survival of the fittest and that sort of thing."

Listening intently to his friend Roy couldn't help but question her, because it sounded like she knew from experience that fighting in the ring was very different from fighting on the ground, a lesson hard learned by Roy and even harder realized.

"It sounds like you've fought for your life before. I'm definitely up for it. I get the feeling you know from experience."

Who was talking about experience? Roy's mother would waltz into the room behind Haruko holding a steaming cup of tea, the only way to have tea of course! Jia however would be taken aback as she realized there was another occupant in her son's room! And it was a young lady! The one from the letter apologized that she couldn't make it so who was this girl? "Oh my Hello!" She merrily greeted, "My name is Jia, I'm Roy's mother." She introduced, though she looked nothing like the boy, her accent was nearly the same as his, though it seemed she had a better mastery of the English language than her son. The concerned mother would place the piping hot tea down in front of her son and put out her hand for the young lady to take in a handshake of greeting.
