Deep Reflections Empty Deep Reflections

Post by Haruko Tue Aug 09, 2016 7:47 pm

It had taken Haruko some time to become acquainted with her home here in Ruby City, but now, four years later... it wasn't really too bad. It certainly wasn't Japan and it definitely wasn't her dojo, but everyone here had been pretty friendly. She had a few friends and life was good.

One of the first things she'd done upon arriving in the city was visit Hyacinth Island, the local amusement park and a major tourist point in the city. Certainly it wasn't quite as fancy as some of the amusement parks out there, but if you were coming to visit the city anyways, then who could really say no to roller coasters, right?

It was this reflection on her first few days after having arrived that brought Haruko back. She hadn't actually bothered to visit in the four years since she'd first been here, but now seemed as good a day as any to take another crack at all the rides and games available if only for mild nostalgia's sake. She could use some real adrenaline anyways. Fighting with her fellow students, while exciting in its own right, didn't give her quite the adrenaline rush she wanted since she knew that they were all holding back on her, like she couldn't handle a good, solid punch to the face and not burst into tears. And trying to grapple with the boys? Hoo boy... That was a whole different can of fish.

For the moment, Haruko found herself at the ball toss and winding up for a major league pitch at the bottles stacked before her, her tongue poked only just slightly from the right side of her lips as she reeled back and took her shot.

When your dad singlehandedly supplied all of the fresh produce that the amusement park used, getting a pass into Hyacinth Island wasn't very difficult. For Roy this was just a time to clear his head, he'd ridden all the rides and played all the games, eaten all the food. For him this was a place to relax when he wasn't on the move with any of his after school activities, which wasn't often before. It was just a place to get his mind off all the things that'd happened, both good and bad.

He'd met Diamante and felt like the two of them had hit it off. Then he met Waves on the beach, but also had a tussle with two of his old football team members and that random punk on the beach.  A lot more has happened than what he'd foreseen. That was on top of the fight that'd gotten him nearly expelled and kicked off of every team he'd been a part of.  All he needed to do was clear his head and get his mind back on track in his life. So many changes had happened that he risked being swept away by it all.

A sound quickly pulled Roy from his thoughts. It was the sound of crushed glass scattering on the ground in a nearby booth with the booth manager panicking at a girl with red hair. It wasn't every day that someone managed to break the heavy glass bottles with the flimsy ball they provided. Was she someone with a superpower? Roy adjusted his black cargo shorts and white t-shirt and moseyed his way over to the ball toss game. Perhaps today would be more interesting than he'd originally imagined.

Her aim had been stellar, of course. Haruko wasn't actually a baseball pitcher, but she knew more than enough about how to pitch a ball to be dangerous... apparently literally as her carefully aimed pitch not only toppled the bottles but also shattered them into useless shards of their former glory.

"Whoops..." was all the young woman had to say for herself, grinning happily with only a small amount of sheepishness to it as she scratched the back of her head. "Sorry bout that! Someone else must've put a crack in 'em before me or something! Haha!" She hesitated for a moment before continuing while the guy behind the counter picked up the pieces. "So uh... since I knocked 'em all down I get to choose anything I want, right? I'll take that one over there, yeah?"

She pointed up over her head at a cute little plushy a little larger than her head that appeared to be a chibi anime girl that looked remarkably like herself if she stayed out of the sun for a time and grew her hair out... and wore a typical Japanese sailor school uniform. It was the entire reason she'd made an attempt at the ball toss in the first place so she'd happily claim her prize and be on her way.

It was kind of a spectacle as the worker started picking up the pieces as best they could without slicing a hand open. To win a prize like the Plushy the girl pointed at required three strikes, however as she pointed it out the guy behind the counter stood up from his job grasped the Plushy in question and tossed it to the girl almost haphazardly. If she was gone then the source of his balding would go too. The guy would get back to cleaning up the mess she'd caused without another word, the faster she left the better.

Roy took the opportunity to close what was left of the gap between himself and the red-head smiled greeting her with a beaming friendly face.

"Wow you have a great arm. Do you play sports?" Of course ever the athlete himself, Roy couldn't help but notice the talent and the body that came along with someone that was an athlete. "Roy Wulf." He greeted happily uncrossing his arms and holding out a hand to shake with a friendly smile on his face. Maybe what he needed right now was a distraction and not to be alone and let his thoughts wash him away.

"Thanks!" Haruko smiled appreciatively as she gladly caught the plushie she'd wanted and hugged it to her chest. "See ya later!" And with that, she waved and turned to leave just before she was interrupted by someone speaking up behind her. She was quick to wheel straight around to make a full one eighty and face her unknown fan.

"Sports? Heck yeah, I play sports!" Haruko laughed jovially, quieting down as Roy introduced himself. She took his hand in hers for a strong and friendly shake, letting his hand free after a few ups and downs to continue talking. "Ah, right. You're that violent guy that got kicked out of a bunch of teams, right? If I'd known you were such a brawler I would've invited you to fight me in a good, friendly match ages ago! Name's Saizuki, by the way! Saizuki Haruko! ...Eh... Haruko is my first name. It's a uh... Japanese thing. I still haven't adjusted to the American way entirely yet. My dad was pretty strict when it came to surname before forename... or was that forename before surname? ...Am I even using the right words?" She lightly scratched at her cheek in thought, still hugging her plushie to her chest while she thought long and hard on just what she was trying to say.

It was a nice firm handshake, like very few people actually executed a good handshake. Then she outed him as someone from Alabaster High School, which meant that she went there too, unless she graduated and was just familiar events, but that was unlikely.”Yes.” He admitted bashfully looking away, “Kicked off the Football, Fencing and Kendo teams.” She practically challenged him to a friendly fight. She must have been some kind of Martial Artist. Still he would address her first and most obvious concerns

“English is a rough language, like a patchwork blanket grafting whatever sounds good into itself.” He stated as though he was reciting it from somewhere, “At least that’s what my speech teacher always said when I was having difficulties learning it. I knew some when I came here, you didn’t live in a port town without learning some of a trade language. In America they usually call them first and last names or family names. Please just call me Roy.” Thankfully for Roy he’d met a few cultures on the trade routes that came down from the Suez. He’d been here nearly five years.

Roy motioned for Haruko to walk with him. There were other game booths, some that were well out of the way and not as well traveled with much nicer prizes that most people didn’t know about or see.
Perhaps after Diamante got her walking legs they’d have to come here.

“Saizuki-san, what brought you to America?” Roy had some lessons in Japanese culture from his Kendo instructor but it wasn’t anything big, he’d learned quite a bit about formal titles and the names of some of the strikes and movements and gear. He also did a traditional tea ceremony for the members, it was a treat but felt awkward at times.

"Wow, that sucks... And just for fighting, right? I guess I should be more careful," she noted thoughtfully considering the fact that she challenged guys to fights pretty much daily. It was probably the fact that they were always done on friendly terms that kept her from getting expelled.

"Well, alright then, Roy," Haruko smiled as they began to walk together. "Call me Haruko... or ya know, whatever you want. It's cool if you want to shorten that a little bit, but not too much or it might be hard to recognize if you know what I mean. As for why I'm here... well it's because my family needed some peace and quiet!" Her loud belly laugh immediately following would demonstrate a little as to what she meant on the matter. "I'm just way too much personality for my quiet little hermit family to handle! We live in a secluded dojo way out in the woods. People only come to train and challenge my father so it was mostly quiet, but I really hate quiet. Ya just gotta stir things up every now and again, ya know? Live a little! Have a party! ...Glue someone's butt to the toilet seat. The usual." She shrugged.

"Alright, Haruko." Roy smiled when she mentioned that he'd that it sucked that he'd been kicked out for fighting. But it was much worse than that, he'd nearly been expelled, though few people knew about that as well as Annette's parents paid off the right people to have the expulsion dismissed, if it was dismissed for her then without much deliberation it was also dismissed for Roy. "Not just for fighting. My opponent caused water damage to the school by freezing a few pipes in the walls that burst, plus I destroyed a cinderblock wall. All told nearly fifty-thousand dollars of damage."

He looked up to the sky innocently then back to Haruko. "It was a pretty big fight." Roy declared. Of course the fight ended with him frozen to the floor by a hand, knee and foot and treated for mild frostbite and mild hypothermia.

It was her boisterous attitude that made Roy understand why a quiet Japanese family would go out of their way to send their rambunctious daughter away so that they could get some peace and quiet. Though the fact that she was practically exiled didn't make much sense to him.  She talked of roughhousing and playful pranks. This girl was definitely a handful for sure.

"Did you really glue someone's butt to a toilet seat?" Roy asked interested as if saying that it was just a story that she made up. Leading the pair as they went, the beaten path was left behind, moving through more out of the way booths, like a picture booth and a parks map vendor.

"Aha... Well, that's definitely a lot more destructive than my fights have ever been. I think once I put a dent in a wall, which got me some frowns, but overall it was pretty easily forgiven since I was just grappling with someone in the gym. I'm kind of amazed you didn't just get kicked out since that sounds pretty dangerous throwing your powers around like that. You're kinda lucky, huh?"

"And of course I did. Why would I say it if I've never done it? Boy, was my mom surprised when she went to the bathroom the next time after I went in there. Hah!" She got a good laugh at the memory of it. "I didn't just leave her like that though. I mean... that'd be pretty heartless. When I bought the glue I also bought some remover so we wouldn't have to call someone to help or rip all her butt skin off or anything. She got stuck, I had a good laugh and then I helped to get her unstuck. ...That uh... didn't really make anyone any happier about it though... except for me, that is. I laughed my fucking ass off." She grinned a bit sadistically at that. Being a prankster was just generally what she did!

"Yeah, I guess," Roy responded about his being lucky, he'd had to sit through nearly three hours of lectures from the SAFE committee chairman on power usage, shoulder to shoulder with Annette as the two of them got chewed a new one. Then again he'd not been expelled or put on a watch-list by the Superhero Foundation. They had faith that it was an isolated incident. It was all water under the bridge now.

"You seem like a pretty neat person Haruko, just don't glue my ass to a toilet seat." Roy laughed with Haruko, she seemed so laid back type and energetic at times, someone he would like to eventually call friend. They would round the corner to the spot where he was going to take her, and there was a line of games. But being out of the way these stands had lower prices to try and bigger prizes, including a bigger plushy of what Haruko already had, and several from the same series.

"Here we are." Roy motioned to the first stand a ring toss, the area was sparsely populated, and there were practically no lines. Running his VIP card Roy stepped aside and smiled. "I bet you can't win a bigger prize." He challenged with a playful smile and motion at the array of bottles in the logo of Hyacinth Island in front of them.

Post by Haruko Wed Aug 17, 2016 12:25 am

"No guarantees on that just so ya know!" Haruko exclaimed with a sinister grin. He may have just made himself a target...

Once they reached the new games booths, Haruko cocked her head to the side in surprise and amusement. It seemed odd to offer cheaper and better prizes off the beaten path. Was this a normal carnival thing? Oh well, Roy seemed to know what he was doing and he was paying her way anyhow so she was more than happy to not question it any further and just do her thing.

"You're on!" she exclaimed with an enthusiastic thumbs up, turning back from Roy to the game to work her martial arts magic.

The wild girl took the rings in hand when offered to her with a word of thanks to the one in charge of the stand before suddenly calming in an instant. She took a deep breath in through her nose before letting it out from her mouth in a wisp of air, concentrating deeply on the various bottles both as her targets and her opposition. The rings had the tendency to bounce off the lips of other bottles that weren't being aimed for. She'd have to account for that.

Holding that single breath out, Haruko's tongue poked just barely from the center of her lips a few seconds before she took her shots. There was no waiting in between as the young woman tossed ring after ring in quick succession at certain bottles among the patch.

Roy was pretty sure as she smiled a sinister smile at him that she'd just set her sights on him, meaning he would have to be a lot more weary of her in the future, and make sure he check his seat for glue. If all else failed he'd have to lay down a layer of quicksilver before taking a deuce if he wasn't going to look.

Still she'd accepted his challenge and got right too it quickly tossing the rings and just as she did, all three landed on the bottles in succession bouncing each to different bottles with a ring as the plastic circles found their homes on each of three different bottles.

"That's pretty good. Power and finesse. I'd never have thought it just by looking at you Haruko." He teased playfully with a healthy grin, swiping his card again. "You gotta repeat that three more times to win the big prizes." It was still part of the challenge, and maybe she would be able to pull it two more times. Maybe she wouldn't and he would be disappointed. But after two performances he thought she might be able to pull this off. And there were a lot more stalls to visit.

Again, with the rings in her hand, Haruko took in a breath and let it out nice and easy. She wasn't even fussed by a game like this. This crap was easy and even if she didn't manage it what was he really going to say to her that could be in any way insulting? 'Gosh, Haruko, you only got eight of the nine rings on the bottles. You must really suck at this!' With full confidence in her ability and a lack of concern for failure, Haruko aimed and threw once again. She'd aim to ring the exact same bottles all over again if she could.

"...Easy!"

"Very nice!" Roy complemented before he waved on the man running the booth again and he passed her the last set of rings. This one had a gold ring. The gold ring was a trick as it was only slightly wider than the bottle tops. It would be insanely more difficult to achieve a full ringer this time around, and this was what Roy was waiting for.

If she got this he would really be impressed!

Post by Haruko Mon Aug 22, 2016 11:40 pm

The first two tosses were as effortless as the previous six, but that quickly left Haruko with the gold ring as the remainder. She stared at it for a good long while, carefully examining the smaller ring with a frown before nodding succinctly as she came to a final conclusion.

In one fluid motion, Haruko hopped up onto the counter irregardless of what may have been in her way, lay flat on her stomach, extended her arm as long as she possibly could with just a little push from her power to keep her from severely dislocating or pulling a muscle... and simply dropped the ring over the nearest bottleneck.

With that, she sat back up and spun her bottom on the counter so that her legs dangled off the edge facing Roy.

"When the game fucks with you, you just gotta fuck with the game!" And she grinned from ear to ear. She didn't appreciate the game bending the rules at the last moment to try to prevent her from victory so she'd take matters into her own hands and make it a sure thing!

Roy's eyes went wide and he suddenly laughed as the man behind the counter began to screech at Haruko about how that was against the rules! That was hilarious!

"No prize for you!" The man behind the counter scolded, waving his hands, unsure of exactly how she had reached so far!? He didn't care! Laying on the counter to get closer was specifically against the rules!

"Alright. Alright." Roy agreed calming down, and tossing his VIP card on the table. "Gimme the same thing you gave her." Roy requested.

The booth operator wasn't pleased but wouldn't turn away paying customers. He would place the first six red rings on the counter, he would wait to give a stack of rings with a gold until he got all six on the bottles.

Picking up all six Roy looked with a sly smile to Haruko. "Wish me luck."

Haruko hopped off the counter as the man in charge began to scream about cheating and how she wasn't getting a prize. Haruko wasn't all that concerned considering she'd sort of expected that reaction, but that didn't stop her from turning around to look at the man with a smile and a shrug.

"Hey now! I technically stayed behind the line of the counter! Haha!" It was obvious that she'd quite enjoyed putting on that show, even if it meant getting disqualified when she was a single ring from victory. Sticking it to the man was more important than certain victory anyhow!

She stood by with her hands on her hips and that same smile still on her face as Roy took his turn at this. She wondered just how he'd handle in the same situation when he already knew what was coming.

"Who needs luck, eh? It's all about skill!" she chided as he requested she wish him luck.

Roy smiled at Haruko and looked back to the bottles before taking the first ring onto his fist and tucking his thumb under it, an odd technique and most definitely out of the box. He would proceed to flick it like a coin, and just like a coin the ring would land on the closest bottle ringing as it seated itself on the neck of said bottle.

He would repeat it five more times onto this one specific bottle, landing a ringer each time.

The young athlete had practice, he'd gone out of his way to master these booths since the first time he'd come here and not gotten a single ring to even touch the bottle when he threw them. He copied someone else's technique and refined it for his own use a few years ago. It was a technique that hadn't steered him wrong... a technique he'd had years to practice.

"Next three Please." Roy requested with an obviously prideful look on his face

"You've got way too much time on your hands..." Haruko voiced incredulously as she watched the incredibly odd and awkward technique of flicking the rings onto the bottles like he was tossing cards into a very tiny hat. Despite how weird it was, Haruko took the time to study how he did it, tongue poked slightly from her lips as she stroked her chin in deep concentration as to just how he was doing it and hitting the exact same point every single time.

Noticing Haruko trying to watch Roy slowed down the last two rings. Making sure his thumb was in the right position as she would watch. It was simple. The rings were quite easy to ring by flicking them like coins, the trick was visualizing the bottle as an open container, just big enough to fit said coins.. And having good hand eye coordination helped.

"Yeah, I have even more time on my hands now." Roy responded playfully. After losing his team and club status he really didn't have much else to do, though this skill was raised by many trips through this section of the park over the years.

Even with his special secret technique, Roy took a moment to line up as he got the gold ring into his hands and reexamined his target before flicking the gold ring into air at his target, and he knew from the moment that he flicked it that the gold ring would...

Haruko's eyes followed the gold ring as it flipped up and into the air and then down toward the bottle. It seemed that there was just a bit too much spin on the smaller ring compared to the larger, however, and rather than ringing perfectly like the others, it struck the mouth of the bottle on it's side, bounced and jingled over the other bottles gathered closely together before finally coming to rest half on and half off the neck of one of the bottles, the ring dangling precariously off the side.

"Does... does that count?" Haruko asked, her expression screwing into one of confusion as she eyed the dubious feat.

Roy cocked his head and squinted as the final gold ring flew through the air. It jingled and rang out as it. Roy looked dejected. "Well..." He paused looking to the man behind the counter as Haruko asked if it counted. The man behind the counter shook his head, slowly. The ring had to be completely over the bottle.

"Darn." Roy scoffed pointing at the gold ring. "Next time you little golden jack-ass." He cursed the golden ring. Putting him in the same league as Haruko for ringing the bottle. Close but no cigar.

"Well shoot." He shrugged at Haruko, "I guess 'almost' really is for second best." He would then nod toward the Ski-ball machine. "Ski-ball?" He asked not letting his loss get to him. Compared to all the tries he'd given that challenge coming up one short again was nothing.

"Nah," Haruko answered his new suggestion casually, a corner of her mouth tightening as she considered her possibilities. "I always throw the ball too hard. How about..." She looked around as she let the sentence trail off in the middle as she took in her new surroundings.

"Oh! Ducks!" she called out in sudden excited realization. There was a small man-made pond not far from where they were at where people could feed the ducks and fish swimming about within for a few quarters. Whether Roy was following along or not, Haruko would jog over that way while fishing a few coins from her vest pocket. By the time he'd joined her, assuming he was, she was already feeding money into the machine and holding out her hand for the natural duck and fish food to come pouring out... whatever that stuff was. They apparently loved it so Haruko would have some.

It was almost like she'd flipped a switch, going from a competitive young athlete to an old lady that wanted to feed ducks and fish. He'd completely forgotten about the area that'd never really caught his interest and was more meant for old women or kids too young to ride rides or enjoy the games.

She was definitely an odd one. Roy thought as he followed along behind Haruko. She seemed to be completely distracted by the presence of ducks and fish. "Do they not have ducks in japan?" Roy asked playfully, fishing a few coins from his pocket, ignoring the smell of the place, and coming up with just enough loose change for a handful of the feeding-meal that was to be fed to the foul and fish, right after Haruko got her handful.

The two were instantly swarmed by the quacking majority that would practically beg for the delicious treasure the pair held! They knew where the food came from and now to get it.

"Hahaha!" Haruko got an instant kick out of the duck's eagerness to be fed as a few circled around her eagerly, preferring to attack her on land rather than risk having their food stolen by the fish in the water.

"Of course they have ducks in Japan," she answered simply as if his question were actually serious. She probably thought it was. "I'm just a lover of animals!" And with that she began tossing the food, not making it quite so easy on her feathered friends by just dropping it. Instead they'd have to race one another for the morsels she offered.

Once there was some distance between the ducks and herself, Haruko made her way out onto the small pier and sat down with her feet hanging over the edge to drop a few bits into the pond. Fish were people too, after all, and deserved just as much food as the ducks.
