A Solemn Farewell Empty A Solemn Farewell

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sun Aug 14, 2016 8:43 pm

The sky was cloudy. Not as though it was about to rain, but the sun was still frequently blocked out. Sam allowed himself a slight smirk at the idea that even the sky decided to don black on the day of Father's funeral. There was a surprising turnout for the crimelord's funeral; everyone who was once of the Red Diamonds had shown up, obviously, but a great number of other people showed up. Some of them Sam recognized as contacts of his, personal friends, hell, even some rival gang leaders had arrived to pay their respects. Sam could swear he even saw one of the patrol cops there. The turnout was amazing. The casket was open and next to the hole, people going up to say their last goodbyes. Sam straightened his checkered red tie, a final salute to the "Red Diamonds". Father specified in his will he wanted Sam to give the eulogy. He had spent the past several days preparing and rehearsing it, and it was almost time for him to deliver it.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 8:59 pm

Charon wore one of his finer black suits, still a modest one but one that he had been able to purchase with Father's aid. Charon was sad he wasn't able to give a final goodbye to the man, he would have tried to save him. Charon never liked the idea of being beneath anyone, but Father was a good man that saw value in how Charon operated himself and his men. It was rare for someone so high on the ladder to be appreciative and wowed. Father wasn't like others though, he remembered what it was like to work your way up. Charon stood at the coffin for some time before bowing his head. "I'll protect them...just you watch, I'll make sure your legacy doesn't die with us. I'll fight to whatever end may come, but I won't let it all become ruined. Of that you have my word" Charon said before turning and moving away.

Eventually he made his way to his seat, Mute on his left and Mason on his right. Even at a funeral he still needed to be protected. Sam was about to speak, and Charon had made it clear to everyone that nothing was to interrupt this service. They were all here because of one man, and they'd let him rest in peace. Charon just watched as Sam was about to speak, curious to the words he'd say.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Sam stepped up to the podium that was standing at the head of the casket and looked over the throng. They all almost immediately quieted down, and Sam felt like a stone had sunk into his gut. He had never been one for public speaking, but this was Father's will. He looked over at the deceased man before speaking.
"Respect." He began, turning back to face the crowd. "That was the legacy of Father. He both gave and earned it." He paused, liking his dry lips. "No one knows this better than me. When I was still a boy, I was forced onto the streets. And I made choices that were... Well, regrettable. I picked fights with the wrong people, trying to get myself killed, but I couldn't let myself just roll over and die. And I managed to win almost all of these fights. And Father heard about me. He saw in me... Potential. He had an eye for that as I'm sure most present know." He looked around the crowd and saw many people who he had met in the Golden Dragon while standing alongside Father. "When Father saw potential, he nurtured it. He saw me, and pulled me out of the mud. He treated me with a sort of respect I'd never seen before. The man gave me clothing, food, and a purpose. I'm telling this story because it's one that many of us know. One that many of us were a part of, that we all lived. Almost everyone present was, in their own way, lost on the streets, barely surviving. Almost everyone of us got picked up and dusted off by him. This was his legacy. He didn't make friends with people. He made families." Sam rubbed his mouth for a moment; his eyes were starting to well up with tears. "He was a good man. The kind who would give a man he was about to execute a minute to make peace with his god. He honored agreements, even if they would cost him more than he could possibly hope to get from them."
He shook his head to himself for a moment, and allowed himself a small smile. "But, like any father, he was also often quite... Ridiculous. As many of us know." He straightened up and donned a shadow of his wolfish grin. "The man was superstitious. Never once did he wear matching socks due to some old wive's tale his mother told him when he was a boy. He only wore blue on Tuesdays because on any other day, he believed it would bring bad weather if worn any other day. He carried two quarters in his breast pocket at all times, one to bring himself good luck, one to offer to someone else should they need it. He was just as human as any of us." He smiled to himself, thinking back to Father. "And he died the same way he lived. On his feet. Fighting for his family against those that would do them harm." He swallowed and nodded, concluding his speech. He had never been the best with them, and hoped that his words sufficed. So, his part done, he walked over to Father, and pulled a quarter out of his pocket. "I doubt you need this where you are, Father... But hell, can't hurt." He slipped the quarter into Father's breast pocket and smiled at him. "Thanks for everything." He stepped away from the coffin, and people began standing and mingling again, some telling each other stories about Father, many going up and talking to Sam about what they thought of his speech.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 9:52 pm

The speech was better than Charon had expected. He didn't mean to think little of Sam, but he honestly hadn't expected Sam to say something so...touching. Sam always seemed to be straight to the point, but this just showed how much someone like Father had been able to touch Sam and truly help him. Charon wished that he could have known the man longer, truly become a pupil and learn from him. Life had a different plan though. Father and Lazy Eye were both dead now, Charon only hoped that Father's spirit was resting well knowing that now.

After the speech Charon found himself underneath a tree. HE had always been a people watcher, and today was no different. Very few people wanted to come up to the masked freak and talk about his experiences with Father. Charon preferred to be alone for moments like this anyway. This was only the second significant loss Charon had ever had in his life, he was better at processing alone. Charon just released a small sigh as he watched the crowd have their service. It had cost a pretty penny to put all this together, but it was Father's money, it was the least he deserved.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sun Aug 14, 2016 9:59 pm

As Charon stood beneath the tree, a small, round man who appeared to be of Chinese descent slowly approached him. He was dressed in a black suit, and had a solemn expression on his face. He looked up at Charon and offered him a weak smile. "Hello, sir. It is to my understanding that you are the man who organized this funeral for Father, and have appropriated his worldly possessions, including his men, am I correct?" He had the faintest hint of his native accent in his voice, which was soft, and seemed to be a higher pitch than what fit his face. He offered a hand to shake.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:01 pm

Charon was snapped out of his train of thought as someone approached him and asked a question. Charon hadn't suspected that anyone would come over to him. "Hmm? Oh yes, that would be me" Charon remarked as he looked over to the man. Charon extended his hand to shake the man's firmly. "I don't believe that we've met before have we? Regardless, what can I do for you today?" Charon questioned as he looked at the man, curious as to what would make him come up to Charon personally at a time like this.

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:08 pm

The man shook his head. "No, no I don't believe we've met. My name is Jia Tang. I was, ah... A very close friend to Father. Well, he was a close friend to me at least. I owe the man my life, and I mean that in every sense of the word. He is both the reason I breath and stand before you, but also the reason I lead the life I do. He saw potential in me and helped to cultivate it. The man was... Well, like a father to me." He chuckled slightly at the poor joke, but his smile faded. "I viewed him as family to me, and so very heavily believe that his will should be carried out. Now, I-I understand that given the chaos of these recent days, that not everything will be perfect, but..." He dabbed a bit of sweat from his forehead; the man was clearly nervous. "Forgive me, but I must express some skepticism towards the fact that Sam, the man Father chose to lead his family after he passed, is now playing third, if I'm not mistaken, to a man who until recently was completely uninvolved with the Diamonds. I-I mean no disrespect, but I simply wish to keep Father's will in mind, especially today of all days."

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:13 pm

Charon stood silently, listening to what this man had to say. Jia Tang...the name didn't ring any bells for Charon, but he'd make sure to ask some of the others about it later. For now he just listened to the man and heard his concerns. "You wish to have the legacy of the man you cared for honored, I can respect that. I can understand why you wouldn't be happy with me, especially after I changed the name of the gang" Charon remarked as he looked to the group. "Father was hit hard, there was nothing wrong he did or anything better he could have done to fix it. It was my actions that allowed us to seize control back. Sam willingly allowed me to take over, you can ask him as much yourself" Charon remarked.

"Father cared about his family more than anything, and I'm going to do that in the best way I can Jia Tang, you have my word on that. Sam doesn't want control though, leadership outside of a battle isn't his thing. Ask him yourself if you don't believe me"

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by JollyLabyrinth Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:20 pm

Jia holds up his hand and shakes his head slightly. "Oh, no, no, I believe you in full, sir. Sam and myself have conversed on multiple occasions. I'm aware that he does not view himself as a leader, and I do not mean to question you, I simply..." He stumbled over a few more words, then took a breath to calm himself. "Father was simply a good man to me, and I am by nature skeptical. I simply wanted to hear what you had to say, and you seem like a decent man. And I'm aware that there is nothing I could say that would change current events even if I wanted them changed. All I ask is this:" He swallowed and cleared his throat. "As I said, I viewed Father as family, and by extension, the entirety of the Red Diamonds. If you treat Father's men well, I will see it as honoring Father's wishes. Do that, and you'll have a friend in me." He laughed nervously. "F-for what little that is worth. To my understanding, these days, you wield more power than I do, so my friendship would be of little value I suppose."

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:28 pm

"Father had good men. He had a few bad apples like Lazy Eye, but I'm willing to take anyone in that can follow orders and prove their worth. So far, I haven't had to deal with anyone after what I did to Lazy Eye" Charon said with a small smile on his face as he remembered feeling Lazy Eye's body twitch a few more times before falling limp.

Charon turned and looked over at Jia, sizing the man up for a moment as his power told Charon what it could about the man. "And what power do you have exactly? Forgive me, but I've never even heard your name mentioned before. What exactly did you do for Father?"

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Jia bowed slightly. "O-oh, forgive me. I am little more than a mortal man, no power like Sam does, or you from what I've heard." It took him a moment to register the actual meaning of the question. "Oh! You mean what I do. Ah, I-I'm in the business of, ah... How do I say this..." He swallowed. "I am a, shall we say, collector of influence. Father's boys would frequently end up in situations where they could not escape police custody. That is where I came in. I would use some of my 'collected influence' to get them released. I grease palms. While my gang is comparatively small, very few are foolish enough to cross us for fear of us calling the patrol beetles."

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 10:40 pm

Charon couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as this information was delivered. "Oh really?" he asked as he was starting to see why Father hadn't mentioned someone like this before. Charon was starting to see this as the beginning of a very profitable friendship. Having the right kind of friends was often times better than having the most friends. "Well Jia, I can only say that it's a pleasure to meet you. If you were a friend of Father's I'm sure that you were a good man. You need anything of me, you come to me. I hope that we can continue to help one another moving forward"

Jia bowed slightly, a relieved look on his face. "Th-the pleasure is all mine, Mister... Charleen, is it? I apologize, I'm terrible with names... I-If you wish to contact me--"
"Charon. His name is Charon." Sam's voice said suddenly. Jia practically leaped out of his skin and staggered back. Sam laughed. "Sorry to startle you, Mr. Tang."
"N-no, no, don't worry about it, Mr. Guivine. I was just about to leave anyways." Jia said with a nervous smile. He bowed to both Charon and Sam, then quickly bustled away.
Sam watched the man leave. "I see you met Mr. Jia Tang. Man's a nervous wreck for the most part, but I more or less owe him my life. Can sure as hell get stuff done." He turned to Charon. "What'd you think of the service?"

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 11:01 pm

Charon bowed his head politely to Jia as he left, wanting to show some formality. As a true gang leader, Charon was going to have to play nice with a lot more people now than before. "Take care of yourself Jia, hope to see you around" Charon said before watching the man take off.

"It seems like you owe your life to quite a few people, seems like it'll be impossible for you to pay off that debt" Charon said mostly jokingly as he placed his hands in his pockets before turning to Sam. "Stuff like this is always strange for me" Charon admitted. "You did well though, your words were from the heart and I can tell that Father really did mean a lot to tell you. I'm sorry I wasn't there when everything happened, perhaps I would have been able to save him...the world doesn't reward us for our what if situations though" Charon said quietly.

"And you? Are you alright?" Charon asked as he looked to Sam. Despite them being allies for convenience, Charon had grown a strong level of respect for Sam. War caused you to grow close to the people that you fought with, and Charon and Sam had fought back to back on many occasions now. "The boys are wondering when you're coming back, but I gave you my word you could take whatever time you needed. I don't intend to go back on that...though there is something I need your help with when you're ready"

Sam laughed at Charon's joke about owing his life. "I owe my life to many people, yeah, but most of them owe me theirs, so we just call it even." He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He wasn't sure what to say to Charon's condolences, even if they seemed genuine.
His head perked up when Charon asked how he was. "I'm... I'm alright. I'll be back in the next three days, you have my word on that." He cracked his neck. "I'm sorry for not being around lately. Just... Second parent I've lost. And I didn't even see this one coming."

A Solemn Farewell Empty Re: A Solemn Farewell

Post by Charon Sun Aug 14, 2016 11:21 pm

"I'm sympathetic to losing parents, even if the situations were not the same" Charon remarked as he just stood at Sam's side, not feeling the need to push more of his apologies on to the man. If he wanted to talk he would, if he didn't some things were better left unsaid. Everyone processed guilt and pain in their own way, no way was better than the other no matter what some doctor might say. Everyone was different, and they were the only ones that knew how to make themselves feel better.

"As I said Sam take whatever time you need, longer than three days if necessary" Charon said before pulling his suit jacket tightly around him. "I have to go, afraid I still have work to do. When you're ready to get to work come find me at my new headquarters. I have a job specifically for you" Charon said before turning and leaving through the main gate of the cemetery. It started to rain, prompting others to start leaving as well.
